NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Behind a record-tying performance from sophomore
Carson Pokorny and another dominating offensive effort across the board, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team wrapped up an undefeated conference season on Wednesday night with a 7-0 win over Marymount. Pokorny matched the CNU record for assists in a game, with four, and seven different players got into the scoring column.
The Captains (16-0-1, 9-0-0) posted the first undefeated year in league play since 2010 and only the sixth in program history. CNU also extended it's program record unbeaten streak to 17 games and matched the all-time mark with 14 straight wins.Â
With the setback, Marymount closes their season with a 2-12-2 overall mark and a 1-8-0 record in CAC action. Playoff seeding was determined after the action, with top-seeded Christopher Newport set up to play the winner of the #4 St. Mary's (Md.) and #5 Mary Washington in the semifinals next Wednesday, November 1.Â
In Wednesday night's matchup on a brisk Fall night at Captains Field, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport offense took control early in the action. Just under eight minutes into the game, Pokorny notched the first of four assists in the game when she laced a perfect corner kick into the box for sophomore
Logan Montel, who headed home the shot for a goal. It would hold up as the game-winning strike on Montel's fifth goal of the season.Â
Pokorny also assisted on the next goal with another excellent corner kick. In the 18th minute, her pass reached
Sydney Rife first, who shuffled the ball forward on the near post to
Gabby Gillis for the score. Gillis notched her 11th goal of the season by slamming it into the back of the net.Â
CNU carried a 3-0 lead into halftime courtesy of a goal in the 37th minute when senior
Alex Miller set up sophomore
Kayla Locklear for her second of the year. Miller made a stellar drive down the left side past her defender, reaching the goal line before cutting back and delivering a low liner to Locklear. The second year forward connected by the Marymount goalkeeper to give CNU a commanding 3-0 lead.Â
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio was forced to make just one save in the first half. She was tested more in the second, making four stops between the pipes while securing her 15th win of the year, improving to 48-8-2 for her career. The clean sheet was her 25th career solo shutout.Â
With a big lead in hand, Pokorny and the CNU offense would throttle back up early in the second half to put the game out of reach. First, just 1:30 into the second half, Pokorny found Rife for a one-timer off a low pass into the left side of the goal. She then would grab her record-tying fourth helper in the 56th minute while setting up league-leading scorer
Riley Cook. Rookie
Maxine Borris started the play with a nifty move on her defender down the right side. She then crossed the ball past the goalmouth for Pokorny, who touched inside for Cook to power home her 14th goal of the year. With the assist, Pokorny matched Chelsea Wolfe's record set in the 2012 season. She also now has 11 assist this season, leading the league and setting a new standard for sophomores at Christopher Newport.Â
Not even four minutes later,
Danielle Pratt and
Taylor Hudgins delivered an exciting goal from outside the box to make it 6-0. Then, rounding out the offensive performance was a special moment for senior
Rachael Brewer, playing in her final home regular season game. Brewer, a career defender for the Captains, delivered a picture-perfect lofted shot into the back corner of the goal for her first career tally. The play came in the 76th minute after the defense failed to clear a corner kick attempt, allowing Brewer time and space to punch in the final goal of the match, prompting an eruption from the CNU sideline.Â
Christopher Newport pressured Marymount goalkeeper Sydney Sherman all day, putting 22 shots on-goal and taking 38 attempts. Sherman made 14 saves, including a pair of exceptional stops from point blank range against Cook and
Alexis Haycraft.Â
The Captains now have a full week to rest and prepare for defense of the conference crown, as CNU heads into the 2017 CAC Tournament as defending champions and the top seed for the fifth straight year. Game times will be announced on CNUsports.com when they are made available.Â
