Captains Win 10th Straight as No. 23 CNU Volleyball Sweeps Frostburg State, 3-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport volleyball team registered its 10th straight victory as the Captains swept Frostburg State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17), during a Capital Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

Celebrating Senior Day, Tylar McGill handed out a match-high 16 assists while collecting seven digs. Fellow fourth-year standout Katelyn Newsome also pumped nine kills to help lead the offensive attack.

Along with the seniors, Katie Piper contributed her sixth double-double of the year with 12 kills and a dozen digs. Josie Lucernoni also collected a team-high 16 digs, marking her 22nd consecutive double-digit effort. Additionally, Katie Crofford plucked nine digs and was flawless on serve-receive, converting all 16 of her reception attempts.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 22-3 overall, including 7-0 in league action. The setback drops Frostburg State to 15-10 with a 3-4 mark against CAC opponents.

In the first set, the two squads battled to an 8-8 tie before CNU caught fire in the middle of the frame. Riley Garrison drilled back-to-back kills before Kellyn DeChirico added a pair of her own on the way to a 20-12 advantage. With more than enough cushion, Piper pounded away and landed two late darts, including the clincher off a feed from Ashley Burgess, to lock up the 25-14 triumph.

Following the same script in the second stanza, the Captains used another mid-set surge to grab a stranglehold on the frame. Although FSU snuck out to an early edge, Tiaralyn McBride took over at the line and kept the Bobcats off-balance as the freshman laced an ace and capitalized on four Frostburg State miscues on the way to a 10-5 lead. The visitors eventually whittled their deficit back down to three, but CNU excelled at the line as McBride, Burgess, and Crofford all pumped aces during the waning moments to lock up the 25-18 victory.

Keeping things close in the third, Frostburg State trailed by one at 10-9, but the hosts had an answer. Newsome blistered the opposition with four kills, while DeChirico added one to help push the lead to 17-10. Following a Bobcat timeout, Newsome came back with another kill, Garrison and Abby Oren teamed up on a block, and Piper added the final dagger with her 12th blast to wrap up the 25-17 win.

Christopher Newport will return to action on October 27 when the squad heads to York (Pa.) for a 7 p.m. bout.
