CNU Men's Soccer Blitzes By Penn State Harrisburg in CAC Action, 4-1, for 10th Straight Win

Box Score in HTML Format

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nation's leading offense was on display again Saturday night, as the Captains raced by Penn State Harrisburg, 4-1, in Capital Athletic Conference action.  The Captains' win streak reached double digits as, with their 10th straight win, CNU improved to 11-2-0 overall with a 6-0-0 record in conference play.

With a light fog blanketing Captains Field, Christopher Newport notched their 10th straight game with multiple goals and continued its trend of first half dominance. All four of CNU's goals came in the first half on Saturday, and the Captains have now outscored opponents, 34-4, in the opening stanza.

With the loss Penn State Harrisburg falls to 10-6-0, 3-3-0. The Captains outshot the Lions, 25-3, and were led by two goals from leading scorer Stephen Durbin and two assists by junior defender Bobby Seifert

The action got started early as Durbin collected a loose ball in the box just 4:36 into the match. The junior scored his 11th goal of the season with the first goal of the match after the defense failed to clear for the Lions. Just under nine minutes later, Durbin notched the eventual gamewinner on a similar play, after a long ball came in from Seifert. Seifert's pass was immediately deflected to the foot of Durbin and he unleashed a hard shot by the keeper for his 12th goal.

Carrying a 2-0 lead for most of the half, the Captains would tack on two more late in the first stanza. First, after a handball in the box led to a penalty kick for the Captains, senior James Lee smashed the free attempt for his sixth goal and a 3-0 lead. Finally, with less than 20 seconds remaining, Seifert set up another goal after making a tremendous run on a counter-attack. The defender found himself loose on a breakaway down the right side and smashed a hard shot off the keeper's hands, where Michael Pelletier came through the middle to clean up and hammered home the goal.

The goal was Pelletier's first career tally and gave the Captains a 4-0 advantage. CNU outshot the Lions, 17-2, in the first half. In the second half, the lone score would come off a long free kick from Victor Weaver for Penn State Harrisburg. The Lions midfielder found the upper 90 with a 40-yard shot to avoid the shutout, despite the visitors being held to just three shots in the game.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday, October 18 as they host Salisbury University at 7:00 pm. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
