FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Just two weeks after the two programs matched up in the Freeman Center in a mid-season Capital Athletic Conference battle, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport Captains will head to the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday for another pivotal doubleheader. First, at 6:00 pm, it will be another top-ten showdown as the fifth-ranked CNU women's basketball team (19-0, 12-0) take on the eighth-ranked Eagles (18-1, 11-1). Following the highly anticipated women's rematch, the Captains men's program, ranked No. 3 in the nation, will face the Mary Washington men at 8:00 pm.

The conference doubleheader will be played at Rosner Arena in the Anderson Center on the campus of UMW in Fredericksburg, Va. For those unable to attend, live stats and a live video webcast will be available, with links found on the schedule pages on CNUsports.com, or at the top of this page.

Christopher Newport remains one of just eight teams in the nation without a loss, and comes into Wednesday's tough tilt with the second longest winning streak in program history at 19 straight.  Mary Washington was one of the last ten remaining undefeated teams in the nation when the two teams did battle on January 18, when CNU pulled out a 75-67 victory. In that win, junior Makenzie Fancher led the way for CNU, scoring 20 points while dishing out five assists.

Fancher was the lone double-figure scorer in that contest for the Captains, which features a balanced offense that has seen eight different players lead the way in scoring for a game. Junior Sam Porter is the leading scorer for the league's leading offense, averaging 12.9 points per game while also hauling in a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game. Porter is also among the nation's leaders in steals, with 71 thefts this season to lead the league.

On the other side of the court, the home team will feature two of the league's top scorers, in senior Brianne Comden and junior Kendall Parker. Comden ranks second and Parker third in the CAC scoring column, with Comden pouring in 15.9 and Parker 14.7 points per game. With those two leading the charge in the scoring column, their success has been facilitated by one of the league's best passers in senior Megan Green, who ranks second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.  Green has assisted on 65 buckets this season while only turning the ball over 20 times.

With just six games remaining on the regular season schedule, Wednesday's matchup could prove a pivotal piece in the postseason puzzle, with both teams vying for home court advantage in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.

In the men's battle, the CNU men will be looking to extend a ten-game winning streak into the month of February. The Captains are now 17-2 overall this season with an 11-1 mark atop the CAC standings, while Mary Washington comes into the contest with a 10-9 overall, 6-6 CAC record. The playoff picture on the men's side is very much a haze, as only two games separate third place and eighth place in the league standings, with only the top six teams earning a spot in the postseason. Depending on other results in the conference, the Captains could secure one of those six spots as early as Wednesday, while Mary Washington remains in the middle of the pack, locked in a three-way tie for fourth with Marymount and Wesley.

The Captains have seen five different players lead the squad in scoring over the last five games, as Coach Krikorian's squad continues to showcase relentless depth. Four players are averaging between 10.1 and 11.5 points per game to lead the way for an offense that ranks second in the league in scoring with 74 points per game.  At the top of the list are the team's two leading rebounders, as Marcus Carter is averaging 11.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while Tim Daly has added 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest.

In the matchup two weeks ago, CNU captured an 81-65 win with four players in double figures led by Kevin Regimbal's 18 points. Rookies Luther Gibbs (14 pts) and Savonte Chappell (11 pts) were big in that matchup, while Daly just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Mary Washington was led by Johnny Cronin's 11 points and eight rebounds on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting night. The Eagles also feature the league's second-leading scorer in junior forward Eric Shaw, averaging 16.2 points per game.  The three-point shot has been key to success for Mary Washington, as John Lutkenhaus, Austin Hall, and second semester newcomer A.J. Robinson are among the league leaders in attempts from deep per game. The senior, Lutkenhaus, ranks second in the conference with a 42.5% mark from long range.

Following Wednesday's matchup, the Captains will conclude the week on the road again this Saturday, February 4, as they travel to St. Mary's College of Maryland for games at 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
