A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS
Â
Senior
Hannah Miller is on the verge of making history for CNU as the two-time All-American is only one block shy of her 400th career rejection. Not only would she become just the third player in program history to reach that mark, but she would also become only the fifth active player at any level of the NCAA with 1000 kills and 400 blocks. She joined the prestigious 1000-kill club earlier this month.
Â
Overall this season, Miller ranks 17th in the NCAA with 64 blocks, while her .334 hitting percentage places her in the top-50 nationally. Equally impressive,
Hope Webb ranks among the top-100 in the country with a 9.22 assists-per-set average, and her 498 total helpers already rank third among freshmen in CNU history.
Â
As a team, Christopher Newport is 25th in the nation with a 2.12 blocks-per-set average and in the top-50 in both kills- and assists-per-set.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Â
On Tuesday, CNU took down former USA South foe William Peace, 3-0, at the Freeman Center. The Captains hit .276 against the Pacers as Miller led the way with 13 kills on 28 swings.
Riley Garrison also clubbed 10 blasts, and
Rachel Blitt chipped in with eight on 18 attempts. Meanwhile, Webb dished out 36 assists and punched two aces, while
Rachel Close led the back row with 15 digs.
Katie Crofford also pocketed a dozen and helped prevent Peace from registering a single ace.
Â
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Â
Southern Virginia comes into Friday's contest with a 2-3 record at home, including a 3-0 win over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday. The Knights also kicked off CAC action on Wednesday with a 3-1 setback against Mary Washington. Overall this season, Hannah Allred and Penny Gwynn are both averaging over 3.5 kills-per-set. Valerie Baety has anchored the team at the setter position with 415 assists, and Hannah Hosier boasts a team-best 3.41 digs-per-set mark.
Â
Frostburg State has won three of its last four outings and will face Mary Washington on Friday before hosting the Captains on Saturday. The Bobcats have been especially effective at home with a 3-1 record in Frostburg. Lindsey Scepura has paced FSU and currently leads the CAC with a 5.30 digs-per-set average. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, Naya Cheatem has 118 kills and a .251 hitting percentage, while Madelyn Torres is averaging 7.15 assists per set.
