VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- For the fourth straight game to open the season, the powerful Christopher Newport men's soccer team cruised to victory with a multi-goal effort, racing away from Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday night for a 3-0 win. The Captains' offense has now outscored opponents 18-2 to start the year, posting three straight shutouts while improving to 4-0-0 on the season.
The Marlins fall to 1-2-1 after their first four games, despite Jay Fox making a career-high nine saves in goal. The CNU attack pepper Fox with 12 shots on-goal and 24 total attempts in the game.
Senior defender
Sammy Blosser got the scoring started for Christopher Newport, putting away a penalty kick goal in the 17th minute. While CNU added two more goals in the second half, Blosser's second career goal would hold up as the gamewinner.
Junior midfielder
Andrew Gogolin would have the best chances in the flow of play for CNU in the first half, connecting on shots in the 14th and 27th minutes that forced Fox to make a save. The Captains' outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 11-4, in the first half, with a 5-1 advantage in shots on-frame.
In the second half, things opened up for the Captains with another penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute of play. This time, senior
Jimmy Grace stepped in to deliver the insurance goal, his second of the season.
As the CNU offense controlled the second half, a third and final tally would come in the 72nd minute. After a throw-in from sophomore

Hunter Johnson dribbled to the center of the field and ripped a hard shot from the top of the box to beat Fox for the score. Johnson's second career goal put the finishing touches on another stellar offense showing by CNU, now averaging 4.5 goals per game.
The defense ran it's shutout streak to three games, as sophomore goalkeeper
Zach Pedini played the full 90 minutes, making three saves. The Captains' back line made sure that Pedini was relatively untested, allowing just seven total shots and three on-goal.
Patrick Burns led the Captains with eight total shots, putting three on-goal, while Grace and Gogolin each added three shots apiece. Blosser, Johnson and rookie
Derek Cook also added multiple attempts in the game for CNU.
Christopher Newport will be back in action on Wednesday, facing former conference foes Methodist University at 5:00 pm. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the women's team, kicking off against Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
