PERRY, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder
Randy Foster collected honorable mention All-American accolades from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association after the third-year standout pieced together one of the finest campaigns in Christopher Newport men's lacrosse history.
With the national award, Foster becomes the first Captain in CNU history to earn USILA All-American honors. Earlier this year, he also became the first player to earn first-team All-Conference accolades after securing top honors from the Capital Athletic Conference.
During his third season at Christopher Newport, Foster stood second on the team with 36 goals and third with 47 points. Both of those totals also ranked fourth on the program's all-time single-season list. Along with his offensive efforts, the Forest Hill, Maryland native forced 10 turnovers and collected 36 ground balls while anchoring the midfield unit.
Electric throughout the year, Foster registered at least one point in 16 of his 18 appearances, including a six-point explosion at Southern Virginia on April 2. He also pieced together 10 multi-goal outings and had seven hat-tricks.
From March 21-26, Foster blistered three consecutive three-goal efforts. That run was bookended by a pair of five-point outbursts against Union and Frostburg State, who were both listed in the National Coaches Poll. The streak was capped off by a last-minute game-winner against the 15th-ranked Bobcats, which eventually earned Foster the CAC and USILA South Region Offensive Player of the Week awards.
Along with his decorated run in the middle of the season, he also laced back-to-back four-goal efforts at Wesley on April 9 and St. Mary's (Md.) on April 13. Later, he had his last hat-trick in the regular season finale against No. 7 York (Pa.) on April 16 and added another strike versus Southern Virginia in the conference playoffs.
In addition to his offensive exploits, Foster collected at least one ground ball in 15 contests and scooped up a season-high five rollers at St. Mary's (Md.). He also forced at least one turnover in each of his final four appearances, including a pair against Southern Virginia in the postseason.
Through three seasons, Foster already ranks fourth in program history with 68 career goals, while his 93 points place him seventh on CNU's all-time list. In 49 career games, he also boasts 94 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.
Guided by Foster's efforts, Christopher Newport posted a program-best 13-5 record during the 2016 campaign, including a 6-2 mark in league action. The Captains eventually advanced to the CAC semifinals and cracked the USILA National Coaches Poll for the first time in program history.
