NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Heading back to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon, the No. 14 Christopher Newport baseball team will host Southern Virginia University in Capital Athletic Conference action at 3:00 pm. CNU (21-8, 7-5) is looking to shake a three-game slide in conference play, taking on the Knights (7-19, 3-9) at Captains Park to close out the regular season series.
The Captains fell to 14th in the D3baseball.com Top 25, and 20th in the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA National Rankings released on Tuesday following a 1-3 performance last week. CNU swept N.C. Wesleyan College on Monday afternoon to right the ship as the offense scored 24 runs in two seven-inning games against the Bishops.Â

On Monday afternoon, senior
Kyle Corwin helped lead yet another fine day offensively, after raising his battinga verage to .291 on the season. The third baseman ranks third on the team in RBI, with 26, and has continued his stellar play at the hot corner with just three errors in 83 total chances.

Brandon Ginch and
Connor Henderson all homered on Monday, raising CNU's team total to 30 on the season.Â
On the mound, senior
Blake Ream leads the team with 42 strikeouts in 35.0 innings of work, holding opponents to a .225 batting average against. Ream is 3-0 in eight appearances this year, including seven starts. Out of the pen, sophomore
Craig Johnson has been impressive, boasting a 2-0 record and 0.95 ERA in six relief appearances. Johnson has struck out 21 batters in 19.0 innings pitched since joining the bullpen.Â
Southern Virginia will come into Wednesday's contest with just one win over the last seven games. The Knights have been led by reigning CAC Player of the Week, Marcus Begg, as the rookie is hitting .416 this season with a team-leading 25 RBI, 19 runs and 4 HR. He is the only SVU player hitting over .300 this season.Â
Following the mid-week matchup with Southern Virginia, the Captains will return to play on Saturday, April 9, traveling to Penn State Harrisburg for a conference doubleheader. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for Noon in Middletown, Pa.Â
