Box Score in HTML FormatHAMPTON, Va. -- The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team closed out the regular season on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Newport News Apprentice School by a final score of 10-7. The Captains scored five runs in the second half of the game, but a six-run 7th inning by the Builders was too much to overcome in the final two innings.Â
Senior
Kyle Corwin and junior
Josh Moore each registered three hits in the game for the Captains, while Moore made the most of his start at DH, posting a pair of doubles while driving in three runs with one run scored.Â
With the CAC Tournament looming this week, starting Tuesday at #2-seed Marymount University, the Captains saved their arms by turning to six different pitchers on Sunday. Only
Corey Williams pitched more than 1.2 innings in the contest, and no one threw more than 62 pitches. The staff game featured six strikeouts including two for starter
Jaxn Lane, two for rookie
Davis Bailey and one each for Williams and
Kyle Zimmermann.Â
Zimmermann suffered the loss for the Captains as all six of the Builders' runs in the big inning were credited to the freshman righty. Â The biggest blow would come when Mike Brumfield delivered a bases-clearing double. By the end of the frame, Apprentice led the game10-5.Â
CNU would score one run in the 8th and another in the 9th, but the comeback was thwarted by the Apprentice pitching staff. In the 8th, Corwin led off with a single and came around to score on a two-out RBI double by Moore. Then, in the 9th,
Joseph Cutchins and
Keith Roberts reached via hit-by-pitch and Cutchins came in to score when
Connor Henderson and
Collin Lawless walked. With two outs and the go-ahead run at the plate, Colton Copeland came on for a one-out save, striking out the final batter to secure the win.Â
The Captains to an early lead, scoring twice in the top of the second, when Corwin delivered an RBI single and Lawless added a sacrifice fly. In the 5th inning, Moore raced home on a sacrifice fly by
Tommy Vitaletti, and CNU tacked on two more in the 6th when Moore delivered a two-run double to left field, chasing home Lawless and
Carter Biringer.Â
With the setback, the Captains fall to 25-12 overall this season, as they turn their attention to the postseason. The 5th-seeded Captains will travel to 2nd-seeded Marymount on Tuesday, April 19 for the opening round of the 2016 CAC Conference Championship Tournament, before then traveling on to top-seeded Frostburg State for the remainder of the double-elimination tournament. Game time Tuesday is set for 3:30 pm.Â
