NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 4 p.m. when CNU hosts No. 7 York (Pa.) in a crucial Capital Athletic Conference battle on Senior Day at Captains Turf Field.
Entering the contest, CNU sits at 12-3 overall with a 6-1 record in league action. York (Pa.) is 13-3 with an identical 6-1 mark against CAC foes. Both squads are currently tied for second in the league standings. Saturday's game will determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the upcoming playoffs. The winner will earn a first-round bye and a home game next Saturday, while the loser will host the sixth seed on Tuesday.
For those fans unable to make it to Saturday's game, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the action with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers on the call. Links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS Prior to Saturday's game, CNU will honor the nine senior members of the program. Together,
Harrison Drier,
Hunter King,
Michael Mabry,
Dave Magdeburger,
Nick Mandros,
Brandon Moloney,
Joey Rolando,
AJ Smith, and team manager
Sean McShea have been invaluable assets during the finest run in program history. They currently stand as the winningest class that CNU has ever assembled, currently boasting a 41-23 record since 2013, including the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
In addition to helping the team earn a berth in the national playoffs as freshmen, the senior class also guided CNU to its first-ever spot in the national rankings earlier this year. Additionally, they have broken the single-season program record for victories during each of the last three years and won at least six games in conference action during the past two campaigns.
Among individual accomplishments, Drier, Mabry, and Moloney rank among the top-10 all-time in career caused turnovers, while Magdeburger and Rolando sit in the top-10 in career points. Mabry and Rolando also rank among the all-time leaders in games started with Mabry just one shy of matching the career record.
LAST TIME OUT On Wednesday, the Captains upended St. Mary's (Md.), 18-10. During the game,
Ryan Mills registered seven points, while
Matthew Crist contributed six.
Randy Foster continued his outstanding junior campaign with four tallies as well. On the defensive end,
Thomas Courtney forced three turnovers, and
Matt Hayden collected seven saves to earn the victory.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS York (Pa.) features a lockdown defense, which ranks seventh in the NCAA in caused turnovers and 14th in goals-against-average. Overall, the Spartans have limited the opposition to just 6.36 goals per game while forcing an average of 12.79 turnovers per contest. Joey Fiorino leads the team with 26 caused turnovers, while Josh Kluver has forced 24. Caleb Abney also spots a .574 save percentage and a 6.46 goals-against-average.
On the offensive end, Andrew Gamble has a team-high 44 points, while Dillon Hannah has 33. Cameron Leech has been the squad's top facilitator with 16 assists. On faceoffs, Jake Katchmark has won 55 percent of his 255 battles. Billy Sasso has also won 44 of his 74 attempts as well.
SERIES HISTORY CNU and York (Pa.) have met five times with the Spartans holding a 4-1 edge in the all-time series. Christopher Newport did win last year's battle, 7-6, in Pennsylvania. Foster posted three points during that game, while
Matt Hayden made 13 saves.
