FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- Christopher Newport shut out Mary Washington twice on Wednesday, taking both ends of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 8-0. The first game went just five innings, while CNU wrapped up the nightcap in six innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Keith Parr's team, ranked ninth in the nation this week, is now 30-5 overall and 10-2 in the CAC. It marks the tenth straight season the Captains have recorded at least 30 wins.
Junior pitchers
Tara Heatwole and
Maiven McKnight threw shutouts in the Wednesday matinee. Heatwole ran her record to 13-3 with the win in the opener, allowing no runs on just two hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched. McKnight is now 8-1 after getting the win in the second game. She scattered ten hits, gave up no runs, and stranded ten runners on base and struck out five in six innings of action.
CNU took advantage of five Mary Washington errors in the opener, scoring three runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth. All eight runs were unearned.
Senior
Scoop Simon got the scoring started, driving in two runs with a third inning double, and the Captains never looked back scoring eight times on only six hits in the game.
In the nightcap, CNU posted three runs in the second inning and then chipped away by scoring at least once in every inning. Freshman
Sarah Clark plated two runs in the second inning with a triple, and sophomore
Rachael Payne knocked in two runs with a groundout in the third inning and a triple in the fifth.
The losses dropped the Eagles to 11-25 overall and 6-6 in the CAC.
Christopher Newport concludes the regular season on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Wesley College. The first game of the CAC twin bill is set for 3:00 p.m., and it will be Senior Day at Captains Park.
Heading into the final weekend of the reglar season, the Captains are tied for second place in the CAC standings. Salisbury has a 9-1 conference mark, and leads CNU (10-2) and Frostburg State (8-2) by a game in the loss column.
The CAC post-season tournament begins next Thursday, April 21st, and continues through Saturday, April 23rd. The five-team tournament will be played at the home site of the top seed.
