FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Meaghan Galvin registered her 200th career point and
Emma Walsh contributed 11 saves, but the 15th-ranked Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-4 decision to 14th-ranked Mary Washington during a Capital Athletic Conference clash on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground Complex.
Against the Eagles, Galvin notched three points, including a pair of goals. With that performance, she became just the seventh player in program history to eclipse the 200-point plateau and only the second to reach that benchmark since 2011. Her 201 career points tie her for fifth on the career list with former standouts Kristyn Hankins and Katie Doherty.
Along with Galvin's performance,
Colleen Bourgal and
Catie Chess also found the back of the cage for the Captains. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Walsh chipped in with her sixth double-digit save effort of the season, and
Corbyn Hale collected a game-high four ground balls.
With the setback, Christopher Newport falls to 11-3 on the season and 5-2 in conference action. Mary Washington improves to 12-3 overall with an identical 5-2 mark in league play. Both teams are now tied with St. Mary's (Md.) for second-place in the CAC standings entering the final game of the regular season.
Early in the contest, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before the Captains settled in. First, the defense clamped down as Walsh came through with five straight saves, including a free-position stop.
Tess D'Arcy also pounced on a pair of ground balls to help clear the zone, while
Lindsay Weaver forced a turnover to cut off a UMW run.
Following the defensive stand, Galvin capitalized on the other end. With nine minutes remaining in the half, the junior snapped off her first goal of the contest to put CNU on the board. Later, the defense kept the deficit at one entering halftime following two more saves by Walsh and a pair of caused turnovers by Galvin and Chess.
After the Captains secured a bit of momentum at the end of the first half, the Eagles quickly flipped the script early in the second. In five minutes, Mary Washington landed three straight blows to steal a 5-1 edge.
Needing to respond, Galvin forced a key turnover and
Sarah Culver jumped on the roller before the offense found an opening. Looking to strike quickly, Galvin slipped a feed to Bourgal, who punched home the squad's second goal to pull back within three at 5-2. Later,
Sam Puglisi caused another turnover to regain control, but the Captains came up empty-handed before the hosts pulled away.
Although the two teams traded possessions in the middle of the period, the Eagles inched ahead. During the run, Mary Washington tossed five goals on the board. Although Galvin, Weaver, and Bourgal all managed to unleash on-target shots on the other side of the field, UMW's goalie smothered every attempt while helping the squad gain a 10-2 edge.
With time running out, Galvin drove home an eight-meter dart before Chess snapped off a screamer to cut the deficit down to six with four minutes remaining. Unfortunately, the Eagles brushed aside the momentary setback and tacked on two more tallies at the end of regulation to lock up the 12-4 victory.
Overall, Mary Washington held a 31-13 lead in shots, while both teams collected 17 ground balls. The Eagles also had a 12-6 edge in draw controls, although
Julia Golden posted a pair for CNU.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Saturday when the Captains host No. 16 York (Pa.) on Senior Day at 1 p.m.
