No. 24 CNU Baseball Hosts Neumann Saturday With First Pitch at 2:00 pm

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team is back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Neumann University (3-5) at 2:00 pm. The Captains come into the contest with a 9-1 overall record, including an unblemished 8-0 mark at Captains Park. Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com/live.

Neumann and Christopher Newport will be playing for the first time in program history as the Knights head home from a spring trip to Florida this week. The Aston, Pa. program opened the season at the Methodist Diamond Invitational in late February and continued on to Winter Haven, Fla. for three more games in the South. The Knights have played in a pair of close games against nationally-ranked teams, including a two-run loss to No. 1 SUNY Cortland, 8-6.

The Captains are coming off a thrilling 10-8 win over Bridgewater on Thursday afternoon, as the team completed it's sixth come-from-behind victory this season. The timely hitting has been key all season for CNU, who posted a six-run 7th inning against the Eagles to come away with the win on Thursday.

Offensively, senior Tommy Vitaletti has been tough for opposing pitchers this season, hitting a team-best .575 in 40 at-bats. He is 10-for-10 on the basepaths and leads the team in runs scored and RBI with 17 apiece. Designated hitter Brandon Ginch is hitting .360 and has 13 walks already this season, posting an on-base percentage of .595.

On the mound, Caleb Myers (3-0) leads the way out of the bullpen with a 1.38 ERA and .174 opponents batting average against. Senior closer Adam Emerson has three saves in as many opportunities and has allowed just one hit in 5.0 innings of work.

Neumann has played all eight of its games this season in the last eight days and will make it nine in nine days against the Captains on Saturday. Cody MacNair leads the offense with a .414 batting average and 12 total hits, while Eric Bergman has been the primary run producer with 10 RBI and a .385 average. Five different players have started in the difficult season-opening stretch for the Knights, led by Zach Cooney's one-run, 5-inning effort against St. John Fisher to pick up the win.
