YORK, Pa. -- Rookie Austin Slough (3-0) made his first collegiate start in game two of a conference doubleheader at York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, helping the Captains salvage a split against the Spartans (6-12, 4-2) in conference play. CNU (14-5, 4-2) dropped the first game, 11-10, before bouncing back for an 8-4 win in game two.

Slough, who hadn't allowed a run in five relief appearances and 11.2 innings of work prior to Saturday, improved to 3-0 when he left the game in the sixth inning with a five-run lead. Sophomore Craig Johnson and senior Adam Emerson closed out the final 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts, making sure the rookie's first career start ended in victory.

In the second game, CNU scored a pair in the second inning, taking advantage of an error that extended the inning. Senior Kyle Corwin delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Brandon Ginch, and Collin Lawless followed with an RBI double to put CNU on top, 2-1. In the top of the 4th, Keith Roberts led off with a double and would later score on a fielder's choice by Austin Henry

The Captains' big inning came in the top of the 5th, as the visitors took a 7-1 lead headed into the second half of the game. CNU scored four runs on four hits in the frame, including an RBI single to right by Roberts and a two-run single up the middle by Connor Henderson

York pulled back within three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Logan Countryman delivered an RBI double and later scored an unearned run on a wild pitch. Johnson induced a groundball back to the pitcher for the second out and then struck out pinch hitter Luke Knott to limit the damage to just three runs on three hits. Johnson, making his second relief appearance of the season, struck out the side in the seventh and faced just four batters in the eighth in a pair of dominant innings. Emerson came on in the ninth in a non-save situation, striking out a pair and escaping without any runs allowed despite York loading the bases.

Roberts, Lawless and A.J. Nicely each had multi-hit games in the second game, while Henderson led the team with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Spartans used some of the Captains' comeback magic in the first game, scoring 10 runs in 6th, 7th and 8th innings to rally for an 11-10 win. CNU scored 10 runs for the seventh time this season, while peppering the Spartans' home field with 16 hits.

Seven different Captains registered two hits or more in the game, led by 3-hit performances by Henderson and Ginch. Henderson drove in a run and scored twice, while Ginch added a walk in a 3-for-4 effort, reaching base four times.

In a four-run sixth inning, CNU took command with a 6-1 lead as Jordan Mason and A.J. Nicely delivered back-to-back RBI singles. The Spartans answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, getting a 2-run single from Patrick Clement and scoring two more on an error by the CNU defense. Christopher Newport got two more back in the seventh and again in the 8th, but the home team went to work in the bottom of the 8th, taking the lead with five runs on four htis and an error. Steve Miller delivered the go-ahead hit, striking a run-scoring double to plate Sean Mohollen.

Caleb Myers (3-1) picked up the loss in relief, while Chris Wolf (2-1) earned the win for the Spartans. Will Grega closed out the win for his second save of the season.

The Captains are off until Wednesday, March 23, when they will travel to face Southern Virginia University in CAC action at 3:00 pm. CNU will then face Bridgewater on Thursday, March 24, before returning home on Saturday, March 26 against Marymount.
