Crist’s Big Day Helps Push CNU Men’s Lacrosse Past Marymount, 14-8

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Matthew Crist registered six points and helped bolster the team's potent man-up attack as the Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team picked up its sixth straight victory with a 14-8 triumph over Marymount during a Capital Athletic Conference bout on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

During the game, Crist collected three goals and three assists. Two of his strikes came during man-up situations as the Captains finished with six tallies during extra-man advantages. Dave Magdeburger also added a team-high four goals for Christopher Newport, while Joey Rolando drove home a pair.

On the defensive side, CNU limited the Saints to only 10 on-target shots. Meanwhile, Brandon Moloney forced a pair of turnovers and grabbed 10 ground balls. Harrison Drier, Michael Mabry, and William Gingerich all caused at least one turnover and scooped up a pair of rollers as well.

With the victory, Christopher Newport improves to 6-1 on the season, including 1-0 in league action. The setback drops Marymount to 4-4 overall with a 1-2 ledger in CAC play.

Although the Saints opened the scoring with a quick strike in the first period, the Captains erupted with an impressive surge to close out the quarter. Magdeburger and Will Geise retaliated with back-to-back strikes to grab the lead. Shortly thereafter, Crist made the hosts pay for their first penalty as the sophomore laced a screamer to the back of the net to snatch a 3-1 edge.

In the second, Magdeburger kept the momentum with another rocket before the defense stepped up. Matt Hayden made a nice save on a Marymount shot before Thomas Courtney ended another sustained rally with a caused turnover. Unfortunately, the Saints continued to attack. Finally, in the waning moments of the first half, the hosts tossed a pair of goals on the board to pull within one at 4-3 entering the break.

Needing a little more breathing room, the Captains went back to work on the offensive end to start the third quarter. Blistering the opposition from all over the field, Magdeburger, Crist, and Rolando all found openings during a two-minute window to push the lead to 7-3. Later, following a defensive stand which featured another save by Hayden and a caused turnover by Moloney, Andrew Ashley drove home a dagger off a feed from Crist to snatch a five-goal advantage.

With the visitors inching away, Marymount shot back with its finest rally of the game. The hosts added their fourth goal at the end of the third period before opening the fourth with two more. With the Saints back within striking distance, the Captains settled down and put the game away with a breathtaking rally in the middle of the final stanza.

Drier and Rolando added two straight goals during a 60-second surge to nail down a 10-6 lead. Later, after the Saints were hit with a pair of penalties, Christopher Newport made them pay for the fouls. Crist quickly capped off his hat-trick before assisting on a goal by Ryan Mills. Following a two-minute penalty on the hosts, Magdeburger and Rolando continued the man-up assault with the final two nails to grab a 14-6 lead with six minutes remaining.

Although Marymount was able to toss the last two goals on the board, the Captains rolled to the victory.

Overall, CNU held a 44-28 edge in shots and a 40-20 lead in ground balls. The Captains also dominated on faceoffs behind a magnificent performance by Tony Cruz. The sophomore won 17 of his 21 battles and grabbed three ground balls. His 17 faceoff wins are tied for the ninth-highest single-game total in program history.

Christopher Newport will return to action on Monday when the team hosts No. 17 Union in a 4 p.m. battle at Captains Turf Field.
