Meaghan Galvin’s Record-Setting Performance Carries CNU Women’s Lacrosse Past Randolph-Macon, 19-8

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Meaghan Galvin set fire to the CNU record books on Wednesday afternoon as the junior sensation established a pair of career marks while carrying the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team to a 19-8 victory over Randolph-Macon during a non-conference battle at a sun-splashed Captains Turf Field.

During the game, Galvin eclipsed the program's all-time marks for draw controls and free-position goals. Against the Yellow Jackets, she posted six draw controls, which bumped her career total to 189 and moved her past the previous record of 188 set by Kaitlin Quigley from 2008-11.

Along with her efforts on the draw, Galvin also buried her lone free-position attempt during the first half against RMC. That goal marked her 34th career eight-meter tally, topping the old record of 33, which was established by Meghan Harkey from 2008-11 and equaled by Ashton Marshall from 2011-14.

Galvin eventually finished the contest with a game-high seven points, including five assists. Her five helpers marked a new career-high and tied the seventh-highest single-game total in program history.

In addition to Galvin's memorable afternoon, Sarah Culver tacked on six points, including five goals, while Colleen Bourgal added four strikes. On the defensive end, Lindsay Weaver and Tess D'Arcy both forced three turnovers and combined for five ground balls. Emma Walsh anchored the crease with eight saves to earn her sixth victory of the season.

With the win, Christopher Newport improves to 6-1 on the year. The setback drops Randolph-Macon to 1-3.

From the outset, the Captains set the tone with their high-flying attack. Galvin connected with a pair of cutters to open up the scoring as Culver and Bourgal drove home the game's first two goals. Later, after Kylie Chaplin snapped off a rocket, Galvin erupted for a pair. First, she bulled past a pair of defenders for her first strike before ripping her record-setting free-position goal just inside the right post.

Staring at a fast five-goal deficit, the Yellow Jackets whistled for a timeout and quickly responded with their first goal, but CNU shook off the blow and went right back to work. Culver and Chaplin added back-to-back bullets during an impressive minute-long run before the Captains came through with a highlight-reel tally to earn an 8-1 lead.

On the play, Culver settled along the near side of the field. With a little room to work, the freshman showed incredible precision as she dropped a pinpoint pass over the RMC defense. Equally impressive on the other end, Weaver caught and fired the ball in a single motion to stun the Yellow Jackets and snare a seven-goal advantage.

Continuing the surge, Catie Chess made a heads-up play as the sophomore star had her free-position attempt stopped but quickly jumped on the loose ball and drove home a second-chance goal. Moments later, Maria Gianelle joined the fun as she snared a pass from Galvin before shaking the goalie. The freshman pumped high and shot low for the team's 10th strike before Culver made the visitors pay for a yellow card with a man-up dart to snatch an 11-1 edge.

After that point, the two squads battled back and forth as CNU flirted with a 10-goal lead throughout the remainder of the first half. Sam Puglisi blistered an eight-minute rocket, while Weaver added her second score after rolling right around a defender to push the lead to 13-3.

Although the Yellow Jackets managed to pull back within seven during the final six minutes of the half, the Captains worked hard on the defensive end. D'Arcy had a great stick check on a Yellow Jacket to pop the ball free before the back line stood up with a sustained run shortly thereafter.

In the final minutes of the half, Puglisi pieced together a great ride on an attacker to force a pass before Kirsten Mendelsohn closed out on a cutter to prevent a shot. Chess also rode a Yellow Jacket to stop another attempt, while Walsh added a huge free-position save just before the break to keep the score at 13-6.

After halftime, Chaplin and Bourgal teamed up on a pair of goals. The second tally was another highlight-reel score as Chaplin slipped free near midfield before lofting a gorgeous rainbow to Bourgal. Running towards the crease, she collected the pass in-stride and laced her second-straight goal to push the lead to 15-6 in the 33rd minute of action.

Although Randolph-Macon was able to break up the run with a goal, Christopher Newport shot back as Culver and Bourgal pumped two straight rockets to retake a 10-goal lead at 17-7 with 22 minutes remaining in regulation.

Following the rapid-fire assault, the CNU defense stepped up with a suffocating surge. Walsh made three saves during a 10-minute window, including a huge stop on an eight-meter attempt. Meanwhile, Chaplin, D'Arcy, Corbyn Hale, and Mariah Ginebra all forced turnovers to keep the Yellow Jackets on their heels and off the scoreboard.

Eventually, with time winding down in regulation, Culver and Puglisi came through with the final nails before Galvin capped off her record-setting afternoon. Following Puglisi's goal, Galvin took the draw and once again added her name to the history books. On the play, she popped the ball to herself, battled through contact, and eventually scooped up the roller for her 189th career draw control.

With another record in the books, the Captains eased into the victory and closed out their fourth consecutive double-digit win.

During the contest, CNU held a 28-19 edge in shots and controlled 14 of the game's 27 draws. Meanwhile, the Captains also led in ground balls, 21-17, including three apiece by D'Arcy and Chess. Julia Golden also picked up a pair and forced two turnovers.

Christopher Newport will be back in action on Saturday when the squad hosts St. Mary's (Md.) at 1 p.m.
