CNU Baseball Hosts Stevenson at 3:00 pm Tuesday Afternoon

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Coming off a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's (Md.), the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, March 15, as they host Stevenson University (6-8) at 3:00 pm. The Captains (12-3) will be taking on a Mustangs squad playing in their fifth game in four days, all away from home.

Christopher Newport has played 13 of their first 15 games at home this season and have been very comfortable in Captains Park, winning 11 of those 13 games. The matchup with Stevenson is the last home game for for 11 days, however, as the Captains will hit the road for five straight games starting on Wednesday afternoon at Mary Washington.

Both offensively and defensively, senior Kyle Corwin had a strong performance in the doubleheader sweep against the Seahawks, picking up three hits with four RBI in the twin bill. Rookie Jordan Mason also had an impressive effort with three hits and three RBI, while senior Tommy Vitaletti continues his assault on opposing pitchers to the tune of a .500 batting average nearly halfway through the season. Vitaletti now has 14 extra-base hits with 22 RBI and 21 runs scored, leading the league.

On the mound, CNU has been leaning on an impressive bullpen all season long. Rookie Austin Slough excelled last week, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts. Senior closer Adam Emerson has converted four saves in eight appearances, striking out 17 batters in 10.2 innings of work.

Stevenson comes into Tuesday's matchup going 2-3 over the grueling road trip to fall to 6-8 overall. The Mustangs have struggled to limit runs against, but feature an offense capable of putting up runs, averaging over 6.5 runs per game. Senior Craig Joseph leads Stevenson with 19 hits, hitting .388 with eight extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
