Third-Ranked Softball Finishes 4-1 in Weekend Classic in Columbus, Georgia

Captains Drop First Game of Season to Top-Ranked Texas-Tyler

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The CNU softball team lost for the first time this season Sunday...but it took the top team in the nation to finally end the third-ranked Captains' winning streak at 14 games.  Christopher Newport completed a successful weekend at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Classic in Columbus, Georgia, by going 4-1 against some of the other top programs in the nation, and heads home with a 14-1 mark.

CNU began play in Georgia on Friday with a pair of nine-run outbursts for two victories over Fontbonne and 23rd-ranked Linfield. The Captains defeated Fontbonne in afternoon play, 9-2, and then returned to action Friday night to hand Linfield a 9-3 defeat.

On Saturday, Keith Parr's squad opened play with a 3-0 shutout over Augustana, and then downed 20th-ranked Lake Forest, 8-3.

Sunday, top-ranked Texas-Tyler defeated the Captains by an 8-0 score in five innings to conclude the classic.

Sophomore Brittney Walters smacked a three-run home run as the Captains downed Linfield Friday night. Senior Hanah Marshall struck out seven in five innings and earned the win to improve her record to 5-0 in CNU's victory over the 23rd-ranked team in the nation.

Junior Tara Heatwole picked up two of the four victories in the circle for CNU, before taking the loss on Sunday to Texas-Tyler. Her record is now 5-1 on the season. Heatwole went the distance, striking out eight and scattering ten hits, in the Friday triumph over Fontbonne.

Junior Maiven McKnight posted the victory in CNU's win over Augustana. McKnight threw a complete game shutout and yielded just four hits in the 3-0 victory.

Keith Parr's squad, now 14-1, returns to Captains Park to host Bridgewater College on Saturday with games scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
