NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 17th-ranked CNU baseball team is back in action on Saturday, hosting St. Mary's College of Maryland (4-8, 0-1) in both teams' first Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season. The Captains (10-3, 0-1) are looking to right the ship after back-to-back setbacks to nationally-ranked opponents this week. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 11:00 am, with the second game tentatively scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.

The Captains opened the year winners of eight straight games and vaulted into the national rankings. Christopher Newport has been led by senior outfielder
Tommy Vitaletti, hitting .519 through the first 13 games. He has 12 extra-base hits, including six home runs, while leading the Captains in RBI and runs scored with 22 RBI and 20 runs. The CNU offense is averaging 9.3 runs per game and are hitting .306 as a group. Senior first baseman
Connor Henderson is riding a 12-game hitting streak and boasts a .341 average with 13 RBI.
On the mound, the Captains bullpen has been impressive, led by junior
Caleb Myers and
Adam Emerson. Rookies
Austin Slough,
Kyle Zimmermann and
Logan Harrelson have also been solid, with multiple scoreless outings so far this season. Myers leads the team with a 3-0 record, posting a 1.65 ERA over 16.1 innings, while Emerson is 1-1 with 3 saves and a 1.86 ERA.
St. Mary's (Md.) has lost five of six games coming into Saturday's doubleheader. Head coach Lew Jenkins announced his retirement prior to the season and is coaching the Seahawks in 2016 for his final season. So far, the Seahawks have been led by Holden Marshall, hitting .321 with 8 RBI, while Hayden Ferington has started all 12 games and boasts a .310 mark.
Following Saturday's doubleheader, the Captains will host Stevenson University on March 15 before hitting the road for five straight games.
