About No. 13/15 Christopher Newport
Off to a terrific start this season, the Captains are looking to improve to 4-0 for the seventh time in the last nine seasons. Christopher Newport has been successful so far this season behind a tormenting defense that ranks in the top 15 nationally in turnovers forced and total steals. It has been particularly difficult to connect from long range against the Captains stifling defense, as the CNU unit ranks third nationally in three-point defense with a .103 mark.Â
Offensively, Christopher Newport has featured three different leading scorers in as many games. Balance has been key, with only one player averaging more than 9.0 points per game and 11 Captains chipping in 4.0 or more. The team leader in points per game is rookie
Micah Maloney, who is pouring in 11.0 points per game in just over 11 minutes per contest. Junior
Sam Porter is averaging 9.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.Â
CNU is coming off a 100-50 trouncing of Meredith's conference foe, Methodist University. No opponent has recorded more than 50 points in a game this season.Â
All-Time Series
The Captains own a 12-0 advantage in the all-time series. Â CNU and Meredith played just once prior to the Avenging Angels joining the USA South Athletic Conference in 2008. Between 2008-2013, the Captains went 11-0 against the Angels in conference play, before CNU left the league for the Capital Athletic Conference.
About the Meredith Avenging Angels
The season started with a pair of road losses for Meredith as Sunday marks the home opener for the Avenging Angels. The former conference rival of the Captains has been led by senior guard Jessi Hayes, a two-time All-Conference selection for the Angels. Hayes is averaging 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while playing nearly 36 minutes per game. Rookie Amy Rhoney has kicked off her career with a pair of terrific performances, and leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.Â
Coming Up Next
CNU will test the waters of conference play over the next three games, hosting, in order, Southern Virginia University, Frostburg State University and York College of Pennsylvania. The Captains open CAC action on Wednesday, November 30 against the Knights with tip set for 5:30 pm.Â
