NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport football squad concludes the 2016 season Saturday, as CNU hosts the Knights of Southern Virginia. Kickoff for the New Jersey Athletic Conference game is set for 3:00 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium.
The Captains, 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC, will honor their senior class prior to kickoff as they hit the field for the final time in their collegiate career. It will also be Military Appreciation Day at CNU.
The game will also bring a close to the
Matt Kelchner era in CNU football. Kelchner, the only head coach the Captains have ever had on the sideline, announced prior to the start of the season that this would be his last.
"This is a big day, it's Senior Day," Kelchner said this week deflecting attention from himself. "I don't want the focus to be on anything other than what those guys have accomplished."
CNU's senior class includes twenty veteran players who will be introduced just before game time. It will be the 169th game in Kelchner's amazing tenure that has included 108 victories and only 60 defeats.
CNU bounced back last week and won on the road, defeating William Paterson in Wayne, New Jersey, 26-7. The Captains, who started the season with a 4-0 record, had lost three of four and now have the opportunity to again finish strong. Last season, CNU won its final three games to conclude the year with a 4-6 mark.
Southern Virginia enters play on Saturday with a 2-7 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the NJAC. The Knights were 0-10 a year ago, and concluded the season with a 51-7 loss to the Captains in Buena Vista in the only meeting ever of the two schools on the gridiron.
Tickets for the season finale will be on sale at the POMOCO Stadium ticket booths beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday. Gates will open at 2:00 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 2:30 p.m. The action will also be streamed live at CNUsports.com/live.
