Box Score in HTML Format

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Behind another marvelous defensive performance and a goal in each half, the 19th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team captured their sixth straight victory, downing Frostburg State on the road, 2-0. The Captains improved to 10-1-0 overall while running their perfect record against league opponents to 4-0-0 and the Bobcats fall to 5-8-0, 2-2-0.

For the seventh time this season, the CNU defense pitched a shutout, denying Frostburg State for almost the entirety of the match. The Bobcats would get the first two attempts of the game on frame, but junior goalkeeper Carly Maglio turned away both shots in the first ten minutes of action. From that point forward, the back line allowed just four more shots, with only two on-goal.

Rookies Shaye Doherty, Keiley McCarthy with juniors Danielle Pratt, Kira Warner and Maglio played the full game on the back line, frustrating the Frostburg attack all night. The defense would also play into the other side of the ball, as Pratt connected on the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute of action.

CNU took a 1-0 lead when rookie Logan Montel slammed a hard shot off of Frostburg goalkeeper Rhianna Lapen, but she couldn't contain the rebound. Pratt got to the ball off the ricochet and put away her second goal of the season, and first gamewinner.

The Captains put five of their seven first-half shots on-frame, forcing Lapen to make four saves. CNU held a 7-2 advantage in total shots in the half, limiting the Bobcats to just the two attempts in the first ten minutes.

In the second half, Christopher Newport would tack on an insurance goal in the 64th minute when a pair of midfielders connected for the score. Sophomore Angie Williams found classmate Gabby Gillis for the strike, taken just inside the box. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season.

Both sides of the ball played well for CNU, as the Captains earned six corner kicks while holding Frostburg without one. On the road, CNU outshot Frostburg 16-6, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on-goal.

Maglio secured her seventh clean sheet of the season, tied for the fourth most in a single season. She moved into the top five in program history in career shutouts with her 13th career solo effort. She and the Captains defense have allowed just four goals in 990 minutes of action for a 0.36 goals against average.

The Captains return to action on Wednesday, October 12th when they travel to face St. Mary's College of Maryland (7-4-0, 4-0-0) in a battle for first-place in the Capital Athletic Conference. Kickoff in the pivotal matchup is set for 4:00 pm.
