BUENA VISTA, Va. -- After canning three shots in the first 21 minutes of the game, the Christopher Newport men's soccer team coasted to its fourth straight victory, downing Southern Virginia University by a final score of 3-0. The Captains improved to 10-2-0 overall with a perfect 3-0-0 mark to start league play, while the Knights dropped their seventh straight, falling to 2-10-0, 0-3-0.

The red-hot Captains offense featured all of the 2016 season so far was on display again, pressuring the Southern Virginia defense all night long. Christopher Newport outshot the home team, 25-3, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on-goal.

Senior Jimmy Grace, the leading scorer for CNU, had another big performance out of the midfield with a goal, the winner, and an assist.  He got the scoring started early when the Captains were awarded a penalty kick just 1:45 into the contest. Grace stepped in and delivered a strike for his seventh goal of the season.

Just over 12 minutes into the game, Grace would then set up a tally for sophomore Zachary Ballard, his fifth goal of the season. With the three-point performance, Grace now leads the team with 19 points, setting career highs in all three scoring categories with seven goals, five assists and 19 points. The goal was also Jimmy's third gamewinner of the year, which leads the team.

The quick burst to start the game for CNU would be capped in the 21st minute when a pair of freshmen hooked up for the third and final score. Freshman midfielder David Eddleton crossed a pass in from the corner where rookie forward Jordan Boone was there to head it home for the goal. The assist was Eddleton's first career point, while Boone now has three goals on the season.

CNU continued to pressure the Knights' defense throughout the night, getting 17 shots off in the first half and eight more in the second. Southern Virginia struggled against a solid CNU defensive effort, managing just three shots with only one on-goal. That attempt was turned away by sophomore goalkeeper Zach Pedini, who picked up his fifth shutout of the season.

After the victory, CNU will now turn its focus to wrapping up the three-game road trip at Frostburg State University on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm against the Bobcats, with live stats and video available.
