NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport men's soccer team, ranked No. 10 in the D3soccer.com Top 25, will close out the regular season at home on Wednesday night, hosting Marymount University at 7:00 pm. The Captains (14-2-1, 7-0-1) will look to extend a season-long nine-game unbeaten streak as they take on the Saints (4-10-2, 2-6-0) on Senior Night.
Prior to kickoff, the Captains will honor a group of 10 men's soccer seniors in their final home regular season game, but the group already knows it won't be their last game at Captains Field, as CNU secured a first-round bye and a home game in the CAC Tournament with their win at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live, as CNU has a chance to secure its first CAC regular season conference crown with a win.
CNU enters Wednesday night's battle after a 4-2 win on the road against the Lions, securing one of the top two seeds in next week's CAC Tournament. Senior
Jimmy Grace led the way, scoring two goals, including his fifth gamewinner of the year, and narrowly missing out on a hat trick in the game. Grace was stellar last week, factoring into five of CNU's six goals scored in the 2-0 week against conference opponents. The only goal Grace didn't impact was a late own goal against the Lions, but the senior midfielder even created another own goal with a hard shot that deflected off a defender in the first half.
With the impressive performance, Grace has taken a stranglehold on the league lead in scoring, with 28 points on 11 goals and six assists. CNU sophomore
Stephen Durbin is tied for second in the CAC with 23 points, and helps bolster a talented Captains' offense this season, averaging 3.00 goals per game. CNU ranks 18th nationally in scoring offense and 15th in total goals scored with 51. With one game left in the regular season, the CNU offense ranks fourth in program history in goals per game.
On the defensive end, senior
Harry Nodwell ranks fifth in the league in assists, with four, while sophomore
Bobby Seifert leads the team in minutes with 1538 of a possible 1545 this season. The back line has posted a 1.11 goals-against average, while the powerful Captains' offense has outscored opposing defenses by a count of 51-19.
The Captains will take on Marymount squad playing in their final game of the 2016 season, looking to close out the year on a three-game winning streak. The Saints have won two in a row, downing Southern Virginia, 1-0, and Frostburg State, 2-1. Senior Ahmed El-Manialawy has factored into nearly half of the goals scored by Marymount this season, leading the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Sophomore Brandon Orozco is second with 10 points, pitching in three goals and four assists. Defensively, rookie goalkeeper Franklin Valcicak has started 15 games this season and has posted a 1.66 goals-against average.
Following Wednesday's action, the Captains will be off until Tuesday, November 1 when they will host the CAC Tournament Semifinals. Stay tuned to CNUsports.com for updates on game times, opponent, and ticket information.
