NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 15th-ranked Captains winning streak came to an end on Wednesday night, but their unbeaten streak rolls on to nine straight games as Christopher Newport women's soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Salisbury University.
An early goal in each half was all the offense that the teams could muster, as CNU saw it's record fall to 12-1-1 after it's first overtime game of the season. The Captains are 6-0-1 in league play and remain in first place after St. Mary's (Md.) and Mary Washington also played to a tie. Salisbury picked up their fourth draw of the season and are now 4-6-4 overall, 3-3-1 in conference play.
CNU got the scoring started on a pretty combination play in the ninth minute of action when sophomore midfielder
Gabby Gillis started the action with a through ball to senior
Victoria Perry. The Captains' all-time leader in assists then played a cross to the left side of the box where rookie
Carson Pokorny connected on the volley into the right side of the goal. Pokorny picked up her fourth goal of the season while Perry added her eighth assist.
For the senior forward, she picks up her 27th career helper, extending her program record, while also recording her 101st career point. She now trails Emma O'Reilly for the all-time scoring lead by just two points.
Early in the second half, Salisbury equalized, when Julianna Boller slipped a pass into the middle of the box for the Sea Gulls' leading scorer, Ruthie Lucas. The junior connected on a one-timer into the left side of the goal to tie the game, on one of only three shots on-goal in the contest for the visitors.
The Captains offense outshot Salisbury 3-to-1, with a final tally of 24-8, but the Sea Gulls goalkeeper, Hope Knussman, made 10 saves to hold down the attack. In overtime, Knussman saved the game for the Sea Gulls with a fully extended diving save to her left to stop a point blank attempt in the second OT period.
Kimmie Kerstiens set up Perry for the shot on the right side, but Knussman picked up her 10th save on the attempt.
CNU will travel to Penn State Harrisburg this Saturday for a Noon kickoff. The Lions are 6-10 this season with a 3-4 CAC record.
