VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Playing on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College in the 2015 Atlantic Orthopedic Specialists Classic, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team improved to 2-0 this season with a dominant 3-0 victory over Carthage (0-2-0). Sophomore Kaylie Deshler scored twice, and rookie Kayla Locklear put away her first career goal as CNU outshot the Lady Reds, 24-3.

Deshler notched the first and third goals in the game, scoring the eventual gamewinner in the 42nd minute. She scored on a one-timer in the box off an assist from rookie MiAsia Pinckney, who picked up her first career point with the helper.

Heading into the intermission with a 1-0 lead, the Captains had put four of their 10 shots on goal. The pace would only heighten into the second half, as CNU scored twice and put nine of its 14 shots on-frame.

Twelve minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Lindsay Mondloch connected with rookie forward Kayla Locklear, who dribbled into the box and smoked a hard shot past the keeper from just inside 18 yards. Her first career goal gave the Captains a 2-0 cushion with less than 35 minutes to play.

Abby Alm, the Carthage goalkeeper, finished with ten saves in the game as CNU continued to pepper her with attempts. Rookie Arial Gardner and junior Allie McWilliams challenged her with back-to-back attempts, and McWilliams added another that sailed just high. Then, in the 84th minute, Deshler converted an unassisted tally to give CNU another insurance goal. Collecting the ball inside the box, the sophomore forward pumped in her second goal of the game with just 6:51 left in the contest.

Defensively, the Captains had a stellar game holding Carthage to just three shots in the game. Junior goalkeeper Haley Casanova registered her second shutout in as many games, forced to make just two saves in the game. Twenty-three different players saw action for the Captains, with 13 CNU players taking at least one shot in the game.

Returning to the Virginia Wesleyan pitch on Saturday, the Captains will face a tough opponent in Berry College (Ga.) at 8:00 pm. The Vikings captured a 2-0 win over the host Marlins in their season opener on Friday.
