CNU Football Hits the Road for Saturday Showdown with Fifth-ranked Wesley

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- For the first time in 2015, the Christopher Newport football squad plays on the road Saturday. CNU, coming off a 1-1 start at POMOCO Stadium, travels to Dover, Delaware, to take on the Wolverines of Wesley College. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m.

"This will be a tremendous test for our program," Head Coach Matt Kelchner said. "Wesley obviously has a very talented team and was picked to win our conference this year. We've worked hard this week to prepare and improve on what we did last week."

The Captains look to bounce back from a 24-9 home loss last Saturday to Hampden-Sydney in CNU's only non-conference game of the season. The defeat dropped Christopher Newport's record to 1-1.

Wesley opened its season on the road last Saturday with a 44-7 triumph at Frostburg State...setting up the battle of teams tied at 1-0 atop the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Wolverines were 12-2 last season and advanced to the final four of the NCAA Tournament.

CNU's defense will need to slow down a squad that scored more than 40 points in ten of 14 games played last season. The unit has showed great promise through the first two weeks, allowing no first half points to the College of New Jersey and ten last week in the opening half to Hampden-Sydney. The linebacking corps of senior Mic Edwards and juniors Allen Hayes and Mikey Campbell have topped the squad in tackles through two games. Edwards, who led the team in stops last season with 71 as a junior, has contributed 18 already in 2015. Hayes and Campbell have each made a dozen tackles so far.

Senior quarterback Tyler Quigley and junior wide receiver Taylor Loudan have led the Captains offense, as Quigley has completed 28 of 44 passes for 388 yards and three touchdowns and Loudan has been his primary target with 14 catches for 195 yards and two scores.

The meeting of the Captains and Wolverines will be the third all-time, and the first as NJAC members. Wesley defeated CNU in both previous matchups in 2009 and 2010.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and live audio will be available at CNUsports.com/live with the pre-game show beginning at 12:30 p.m.
