NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a nearly hour and a half lightning delay impacted the first game of the 2015 Captains Classic on Saturday, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team endured a delay of their own after taking a 1-0 lead against Methodist just over 22 minutes into the first half. The skies opened up and poured down on the Captains and Monarchs, but after another hour and twenty minute delay, the teams returned to the field where CNU held on for the win.

The Captains remain unbeaten this season, improving to 4-0-1 with a perfect 2-0 mark in the Captains Classic. Methodist dropped their first game of the season, falling to 2-1-0 after the rain-soaked contest.

The lone goal of the night came off the foot of freshman forward Kayla Locklear for her second goal of the season. She received a gorgeous pass from rookie midfielder Gabby Gillis over top the defense as Locklear dribbled down toward the top of the box. A Methodist defender tracked her before getting a shot off, but one touch inside and a high-arcing shot lofted over Monarchs keeper Taylor Ross found the back of the net and put CNU on the board early.

The goal came in the 18th minute of action in the middle of heavy rain. Just five minutes later the lightning warnings went off and the teams were forced to evacuate the field. After the break, the teams came back to a wet track, but dry skies, and battled through the remainder of the first half with CNU holding a 14-3 advantage in shots.

In the second half, both teams had quality chances, but neither team could break through. Senior Shaydah Naraghi just missed on a pair of chances, including one that slammed into the crossbar just high. In the 79th minute, CNU nearly cashed in another goal were it not for a sensational defensive effort from a pair of Monarch backs. Victoria Perry beat Ross on the right side and had a good look at goal, but her shot was turned away. The block off the goal line bounced right to Arial Gardner, who took an attempt of her own from the left side, still with the empty net, but Ross' back line stood up again, turning away the freshmen's chance.

CNU held on for the 1-0 win, keeping a big advantage in total shots that finished in a final tally of 29-7.

The Captains will return to action on Wednesday, September 16 as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan College for a 7:30 pm kickoff.
