NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- After taking an early 3-0 lead Saturday night, the Christopher Newport football squad gave up 24 straight points as Hampden-Sydney College posted a 24-9 victory over the Captains at POMOCO Stadium. Both squads are now 1-1 following the rain-drenched game in front of 3,419 fans.
CNU, who opened the season last Saturday with a 31-21 home victory over the College of New Jersey, had trouble sustaining offensive drives against the Tigers stingy defense. The Captains managed just 293 total yards for the night, and only 52 yards on the ground on 29 attempts.
The Captains were plagued by 12 penalties for 130 yards in their one and only non-conference game of the season. CNU's final eight contests will all be New Jersey Athletic Conference battles.
Freshman kicker
Dylan Curran connected for a 32-yard field goal to open the scoring with 6:35 to play in the opening quarter. From there, it was all Hampden-Sydney.
After the Tigers tied the game at 3-3, freshman running back Kyree Koonce scored on a five-yard run with 5:07 to play in the second quarter to give Hampden-Sydney a 10-3 edge at the half.
Koonce scored again in the third quarter on a 14-yard pass from junior quarterback Edgar Moore, who would also reach the end zone on a two-yard plunge with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it 24-3.
The Captains posted their only touchdown of the game with just 38 seconds to play, when senior quarterback
Tyler Quigley threw a 15-yard scoring pass to junior wide receiver
Taylor Loudan. A missed extra point made the final score 24-9.
Quigley finished the game 15 of 28 for 181 yards passing. Loudan caught seven passes for 78 yards.
Junior linebacker
Mikey Campbell led the defense with nine tackles and senior rover
Mic Edwards posted eight stops.
The victory gives Hampden-Sydney a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with CNU. The Tigers had opened the season with a 35-3 loss to Wabash last week.
Christopher Newport will play at Wesley (1-0, 1-0) next Saturday, September 19th, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action. The Wolverines opened their season Saturday with a 44-3 triumph at Frostburg State in NJAC action. Kickoff time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Dover, Delaware.
