CNU Football Hosts Hampden-Sydney...Captains Looking for Program's 100th Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Christopher Newport football squad hosts Hampden-Sydney College Saturday night, and another milestone is up for grabs for the Captains. Last week in the 150th game in program history, CNU downed the College of New Jersey, 31-21, to open the 2015 season. Now, Matt Kelchner's team can record the 100th victory in program history with a win over the Tigers. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Saturday night at POMOCO Stadium.

"We got off to a good start last week, and now we need to keep improving," Kelchner said. "We've got a lot of room for improvement, and need to focus on limiting our mistakes. Hampden-Sydney will come in here fired up and ready to play."

The Tigers are coming off a 35-3 home loss to Wabash last Saturday. The meeting will be the fourth in the all-time series, with H-SC holding a 2-1 edge. The Tigers beat the Captains last season, 35-30, at Hampden-Sydney. The home team has won each of the first three meetings.

Christopher Newport now boasts an all-time record of 99-51 for a winning percentage of 66 percent over 14-plus seasons of action. Last week's win over TCNJ marked the first game ever for the Captains as members of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Now, CNU will play its only non-conference game of the season against the Tigers, a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

"Year in and year out Hampden-Sydney puts a quality team on the field," Kelchner continued. "Marty Favret is in his 16th season there and he's a great coach, so they will be well prepared. We need to play a great game to beat that kind of program."

Hampden-Sydney struggled running the football last week in the loss to Wabash, ending up with minus five yards on 22 carries. CNU's defense last week excelled against the rush, giving up just 54 yards on 26 carries by TCNJ.

CNU rotated senior quarterbacks Tyler Quigley and Arsaiah Robinson last week to start the season, and both played well. Quigley completed 13 of 16 passes for 207 yards and two scores. Robinson rushed for 87 yards on nine attempts and scored on a 71-yard scamper.

Tickets will be on sale outside POMOCO Stadium Saturday beginning at 5:00 p.m. and gates will open at 6:00 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) and live audio and video will be available at CNUsports.com/live with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m.
