Captains Edge Randolph-Macon, 3-2, to Advance to NCAA Regional Championship

CNU Will Play Either Salem or Randolph-Macon for Title Sunday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport will play for an NCAA Regional Championship Sunday at Captains Park. CNU won't know, however, its opponent or game time until Sunday morning.

Darkness caused the suspension of the Randolph-Macon/Salem game Saturday night with the teams tied at 4-4 heading into the tenth inning. The game will be picked up at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning with the Championship game or games to follow. Sunday's title game will start no earlier than 11:00 a.m.

Saturday featured three games at Captains Park, starting with CNU against Randolph-Macon. The 11th-ranked Captains defeated the Yellow Jackets, 3-2, to advance to the Regional Championship. CNU improved to 29-7 on the year.

All of the runs scored in the game came in the fourth inning. After the Yellow Jackets scored two unearned runs in the top of the frame, the Captains answered with three in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman shortstop Rachael Payne delivered an RBI single to get the Captains on the board. Junior second baseman Tori Clarke then drove home two more with another single to account for all the scoring the Captains would need.

Junior lefthander Hanah Marshall went the distance for the Captains, improving her record to 15-2 on the season by allowing just two unearned runs on five hits.

The second game of the day saw Salem come from behind to oust Ramapo from the double-elimination tournament, 5-2. The result set up the Randolph-Macon/Salem matchup that would end up being suspended by darkness tied at 4-4 after nine innings.

Christopher Newport, making its ninth straight NCAA appearance, has the upper hand heading into Sunday's title game. The Captains would have to lose twice to have the Regional Championship wrestled away.

Keith Parr's Captains have now won seven straight games and 18 of its last 19. The winner of Sunday's Regional Championship will advance to play Salisbury in a Super-Regional next weekend at a site to be determined. The Sea Gulls advanced by beating Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in Salisbury, MD.
