CNU Baseball Travels to Southern Virginia Wednesday; Game vs. Randolph-Macon Moved to Thursday

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- In a year full of weather adjustments, the final week of the regular season would not go untouched, as the Christopher Newport baseball team saw its game against nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon postponed on Tuesday. The Captains (12-12, 5-10) will now play the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets on Thursday, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm, following a Capital Athletic Conference matchup at Southern Virginia University (6-16, 4-11) on Wednesday. The Captains and Knights continue to battle for the final playoff spots as the season comes to a close this weekend. CNU and Southern Virginia both remain within striking distance of Marymount and York College (Pa.) with just three games left on the docket. CNU will close the regular season on Saturday against the Spartans, while Southern Virginia finishes against Penn State Harrisburg. 

Southern Virginia captured a 13-10 victory on Tuesday in non-conference play, dropping Emory & Henry to snap a six-game skid. Masen Fenn led hte way with a pair of home runs, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. For the season, rookie Luke Smith leads the team in hitting with a .345 batting average, while senior Giovanni Prado is second with a .306 mark. Prado also leads the team in RBI with 22, and home runs, with four. 

CNU won the earlier matchup against the Knights this season, 4-1, powered behind a strong final inning at bat. Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Captains utilized their home field advantage by scoring three runs and retiring Southern Virginia in order in the top of the ninth to escape with the win. In that win, rookie Craig Johnson had the game-winning hit with an RBI single, and has taken off as one of the team's best hitters in the final month of the season. 

Johnson is hitting a team-best .396 in 14 games played, scoring 11 times with 6 RBI. He has four extra-base knocks in 19 total hits since taking over the starting spot in right field. Sophomore second baseman Keith Roberts is the lone player to start all 24 games this season for head coach John Harvell, and leads the team with 23 runs scored. He is hitting .344 with 16 RBI and seven extra-base hits.
