FROSTBURG, Md. – The sixth-seeded Christopher Newport baseball team used a gutty effort to hang with the top-seeded and fourth-ranked Frostburg State Bobcats (28-3), but could not quite complete the upset in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament first round. CNU (15-13) hung in with one of the best teams in the nation until the final innings, suffering a 4-1 loss.

The Captains will now play at 9:00 am on Thursday with their season on the line in the double-elimination format. CNU will take on fifth-seeded Wesley College, who just narrowly missed upsetting #2 Salisbury in Wednesday's opening round, falling 5-4 in extra innings.

CNU took an early 1-0 lead in their game against the Bobcats, and leaned on a strong pitching performance from junior Adam Emerson. Keith Roberts led off against Frostburg ace Clayton Freimuth with a double to right, and scored as A.J. Nicely delivered an RBI single in the very next at-bat.

That would prove to be all the damage Freimuth would allow in a stellar complete game victory, striking out 14 while allowing just six CNU hits.

Emerson did all he could to match one of the league's top starters, cruising through the first four innings with very little trouble. He struck out seven to hold the 1-0 lead heading into the fifth, but Frostburg would then draw even. After back-to-back walks, the runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt and one would score on a sacrifice fly by Zach Weiss.

The home team took advantage of control issues in the sixth to take the lead, 2-1. After three straight walks to open the inning, reliever Michael Thomas got a key double play ball from Connor Cooper, plating the go-ahead run.

With Freimuth on top of his game, that would be all the top-seeded Bobcats needed, but the team tacked on two more runs in the eighth for insurance. The complete game one-run outing improved the Frostburg starter to 9-0 on the season.

Emerson falls to 1-4 on the season with 5+ innings of work, two hits and two runs allowed, while striking out seven. Offensively, CNU was led by two-hit performances from A.J. Nicely and Craig Johnson.
