NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The CNU softball squad saw its conference domination come to an end Saturday afternoon. The Captains, ranked 15th in the country, breezed past York College of Pennsylvania, 11-2 in five innings, in the opening game of a doubleheader at Captains Park. But the Spartans bounced back to take the nightcap, 5-2, to end an 11-game winning streak for the Captains.
Christopher Newport is now 22-7 overall and 11-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference, and
Keith Parr's team will have to wait until Sunday to wrap up the CAC regular-season title. The Captains will host Penn State Harrisburg Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Captains Park, and CNU needs one win to assure at least a co-championship with Salisbury and the right to host next week's conference tournament for the second straight season since joining the league.
CNU's scoring rampage finally came to an end in the second game of the twin bill, but not before the Captains put 11 more runs on the board in the opening game. Christopher Newport led by a 4-0 margin after two innings, and then put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning. The Captains posted 13 hits, including five extra-base hits, with six different players recording two a piece.
Senior
Sabrina Hill made the most of Senior Day by driving in four runs in the opener with two hits, including her seventh home run of the season. Freshman shortstop
Rachael Payne also homered in the opener for the Captains.
Junior starter
Hanah Marshall pitched all five innings for the Captains, allowing two runs on just three hits. She upped her record to 12-2 for the season.
In the nightcap, the Spartans used the long ball to put the Captains away, as York blasted two home runs and scored four runs in the first two innings. Sophomore Carleigh Ruleman smacked a three-run shot in the second inning of game two after homering in the first game as well. Ruleman's blast was all the Spartans would need as they coasted to the 5-2 triumph.
Sophomore starter
Krista Lewis took the loss and is now 10-5. Lewis gave up five runs on ten hits, while the CNU squad could only muster two runs on six hits in game two. CNU had been averaging over 12 runs per game in CAC play this season. Freshman Courtney Martin came into the game to pitch in the second inning after taking the loss in the opener. Martin threw six strong innings, allowing only two unearned runs on six hits. Her record is now 14-9, and York is now 19-11 overall and 7-5 in the CAC.
Saturday was Senior Day at Captains Park as CNU's three seniors (
Sabrina Hill,
Kelley Foate, and
Kelsey Lewis) were honored in a pre-game ceremony on a breezy and sunny afternoon at Captains Park.
Elsewhere in the CAC Saturday, Salisbury blew out Southern Virginia in a sweep over the Knights. The Sea Gulls are now just one game behind the Captains in the conference standings...CNU at 11-1 and Salisbury now 10-2 heading into Sunday's action to conclude the regular season. Because CNU swept Salisbury in their head-to-head meeting last Saturday, the Captains hold the tiebreaker should they end up deadlocked.
The Lions of Penn State Harrisburg lost two games Saturday at Mary Washington, 8-0 and 8-1. The Lions are now 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the CAC heading to Captains Park for the regular season finale. Live stats for Sunday's doubleheader vs. Penn State Harrisburg will be available at CNUsports.com/live with the action set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
