Captains Host York (Pa.) In Crucial CAC Doubleheader on Senior Day Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Whether or not the 2015 season continues will come down to the final day for Christopher Newport baseball, as the Captains (13-12, 6-10) host York College (Pa.) in a pivotal Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Captains will throw out the first pitch at Noon on Saturday, kicking off a twin bill that will prove essential in deciding the final two seeds of the CAC Tournament.

Live stats will be available at CNUsports.com, with action scheduled to begin at Noon. Prior to the contest, CNU will host a pair of ceremonies in their final home game of the regular season. The Captains will honor four seniors -- Justin Garber, Kyle Goddard, Austin Kilbourne and Brett Mays -- as they take the field at Captains Park for the final time. CNU will also honor Howard Wiseman, the first coach in CNU baseball history, by retiring his number prior to the game.

The conference standings are muddled, to say the least, with four teams battling for the final two spots in the postseason tournament. Marymount holds the slight advantage, with a 7-9 CAC record heading into a doubleheader against St. Mary's (Md.), who trails CNU and York (Pa.) by one game. The Captains and Spartans are just behind the Saints, tied with a 6-10 mark, and the Seahawks have a 5-11 record. With a host of possibilities based on tomorrow's results, fans are encouraged to check back to CNUsports.com, or CACsports.com, for updates on postseason seeding.

One thing is guaranteed for the Captains heading into the final day -- win and get in. If CNU manages to sweep the Spartans on Saturday, they will lock up one of the final tournament spots and will keep their playoff hopes alive. That was something they did manage to do on Wednesday & Thursday, defeating Southern Virginia in a come-from-behind win, 11-4, that spanned two days. With the win, the Captains eliminated the Knights from playoff contention.

Leading the way in the second half of the season has been a trio of freshmen in the lineup. Brandon Ginch, who has played in all 25 games, leads the team with 24 RBI and five home runs. He has also scored 21 times with a .354 average. Rookie Craig Johnson has taken over the starting role in right field, hitting .385 in 15 games, belting five extra-base hits with 12 runs scored. Finally, Tyler Wood has stepped in as catcher in his first year, smoldering at the plate over the last 10 games with a .488 batting average.

All four seniors being honored prior to their final game are bullpen arms, including senior closer Justin Garber. The right-handed reliever has a 1.66 ERA and has gone 3-for-3 in save opportunities. Brett Mays boasts a team-best 1.50 ERA in his final campaign while Kyle Goddard has struck out 12 batters in 12.1 innings of work. Finally, Austin Kilbourne, a utility player who has also been an impact player offensively, has one save in three appearances despite missing most of 2015 due to medical constraints.

On the other side of the field, the Spartans will lean on an opportunistic offense that features four starters hitting over .300 this year. Brad Wenzel has a team-best 25 RBI and 26 runs scored while hitting .306, and Stephen Miele is hitting a team-high .347 in 24 games played this season. The arms have struggled for York, featuring a team ERA of 5.48, but have gotten strong individual performances from probable starters Randy Frankenfeld and Joel Kenney. Matt Goodman has also been strong in the rotation, posting the only complete game shutout of the year for York.

Scores, stats and a full recap will be available at CNUsports.com. CAC Tournament seeding and game times, locations and more will be available following Sunday's action at CACsports.com.
