NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport continued its winning ways Wednesday, sweeping Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at Captains Park. CNU took the opener by a 10-2 score, and then won the nightcap, 10-1. Both games went only five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Keith Parr's squad, ranked 21st this week in the country, has now won six straight games, all in the CAC. The Captains improved to 17-6 overall with the victories to go with the 6-0 CAC mark. Mary Washington dropped to 12-10 and 0-4 in league play. CNU has a first-place showdown coming up Saturday at Salisbury, as the Sea Gulls are 18-1 overall and ranked second in the nation.
The Captains posted 20 runs on 20 hits Wednesday in the twin bill on a sunny and cool day at Captains Park. Christopher Newport has now scored 77 runs during the six-game winning streak, an average of almost 13 runs per game.
In the opener, the Captains started the game with three runs in the first inning, then blew the game open with a five-run fourth inning and closed it out with a run in the fifth for the 10-2 verdict. Senior first baseman
Sabrina Hill led the attack with two hits and knocked in five runs, and junior outfielder
Meagan Jones ended the game with an RBI single in the fifth to create the eight-run margin. Junior
Scoop Simon recorded the only extra-base hit of the game, a double, and scored three times.
Junior lefthander
Hanah Marshall went the distance in the first game and picked up her ninth win of the season against just two losses. Marshall allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five Eagles in five innings of work.
In the second tilt, the Captains fell behind in the top of the first, 1-0, but bounced back quickly by scoring four in the bottom of the frame. CNU then proceeded to score in the next three innings to put away the Eagles, 10-1. Christopher Newport took advantage of four Mary Washington errors, scoring seven unearned runs in the triumph.
Meagan Jones had another big game for CNU. Jones, the Co-Player of the Week this week in the CAC, posted three more hits including a double. She finished the doubleheader five-for-eight with four runs scored and two runs batted in.
Sabrina Hill and
Scoop Simon both registered RBI doubles in the second game.
Sophomore starter
Krista Lewis pitched all five innings, giving up just one run while scattering six hits. Lewis improved her record to 8-4 for the season.
The Captains and Salisbury will begin their doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 in Salisbury, Maryland.
