FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- In another edition of the 2015 spring schedule gone awry, the Captains baseball team is now slated to play five games over the next six days, starting with a road trip to the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm in Fredericksburg, with live stats and video links available at CNUsports.com.
Due to inclement weather that impacted the majority of the early season schedule, CNU will be forced to challenge their pitching staff yet again this week, against some of the top competition in the league. The Captains (10-9, 4-7) take on the Eagles (15-5, 6-5) after Mary Washington eked out the first game of the home-and-home series in Newport News, 6-5. In that game, CNU scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but could not quite complete the comeback against the then-undefeated Eagles.Â
Since that game on March 12, the Captains have been up-and-down, scoring 29 runs in a three-game stretch against conference opponents, but then suffering a doubleheader sweep to Wesley this weekend, scoring just five times in two games.Â
The offense has been led by three players at the top of the lineup in junior
Connor Henderson, sophomore
Keith Roberts and rookie
Brandon Ginch. Henderson is hitting .385 with 15 runs scored, Roberts is at .364 with a team-best .430 on-base percentage and Ginch leads the squad with 10 extra base knocks to go with his .352 average.Â
Mary Washington features the league's leading hitter, Jono Haught, who leads the CAC in average, home runs, runs scored, RBI and triples. The senior catcher is batting an absurd .570 through 20 games played, scoring 26 times with 35 RBI and seven home runs. He is at the forefront of a potent Eagles attack, hitting .321 as a team. Rookie David Slupek is hitting .433 with 20 RBI and 13 extra-base hits.Â
Ryan van Assche, the CAC Pitcher of the Week, picked up the win when he tossed against the Captains in the first matchup, striking out seven in 7.0 innings of work. With a 6-1 overall mark this season, van Assche leads the staff with a 1.59 ERA as the junior has led the team to a 2.93 ERA.Â
Following Tuesday's road trip to Fredericksburg, the Captains will return home to take on top-ranked Salisbury University on Thursday, April 2, before traveling to St. Mary's (Md.) for a CAC doubleheader on Saturday, and to Apprentice School for one on Sunday. Â
