Box Score in HTML Format DOVER, Del. -- Playing a pair of conference games on the road, the Christopher Newport baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to Wesley College on Saturday. The Captains (10-9, 4-7) dropped a 6-1 decision in the first game and suffered a 7-4 loss in game two. The Wolverines improve to 6-10, 4-5.
Cameron Parker (1-3) took the hill for the Captains in the first game, coming off the finest start of his career last Saturday. Parker struck out eight in seven shutout innings against the Penn State Harrisburg Lions last week, and looked strong at the outset again against the Wolverines. The sophomore right-hander gave up just two hits in the first three innings, cruising through what looked to be a pitchers' duel early on.
Wesley scored two on Parker in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. CNU scratched one across in the top of the seventh to make it 3-1, but three more for Wesley in the bottom half of the seventh gave the home team a 6-1 lead.
The Captains scored after a
Craig Johnson single and
Kyle Corwin walk led off the inning, and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Bryant Lowry. The next hitter,
Tyler Wood, delivered an RBI groundout to plate Johnson, but that would be the extent of the damage for CNU in the game.
Connor Springsteen (1-1) turned in a fine start for Wesley, giving up just three hits in eight innings of work, allowing just the one run. Brett McCulley finished out the win with a perfect ninth inning.
In game two, senior
Brett Mays got the start, pitching effectively into the fourth inning. The right-hander gave up just three unearned runs and five hits while striking out four for the Captains.
Joe Burris got CNU through five with 1.1 scoreless, but the bullpen would surrender four runs over the final three innings.
Sam Meck (1-2) picked up his first win of the season with a six-inning start for Wesley, striking out five Captains while giving up three runs. The Captains put two on the board to tie the game at 2 in the third inning as the offense continues to be led by the top of the linup.
Keith Roberts singled with two outs and came around to score on a double by
A.J. Nicely. Nicely then also scored one batter later as
Brandon Ginch singled to right field.
Wesley broke the tie in the fourth with an RBI single from Tyler Hunter, and extended the lead with three in the bottom of the sixth. Despite trading runs in the seventh, the Captains could not close the gap and Wesley went on to win, 7-4.
Ginch and Johnson posted multi-hit efforts in the second game, and they also led the team with three hits in the doubleheader.
Christopher Newport returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 31 as they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on the University of Mary Washington at 3:00 pm.
