DOVER, Del. -- Carrying a modest three-game winning streak into this weekend, the Christopher Newport baseball team is back in Capital Athletic Conference action on the road, traveling to Wesley College (4-10, 2-5) for a doubleheader on Saturday. The Captains (10-7, 4-5) will take on the Wolverines in a pair of nine-inning contests with first pitch of game one scheduled for Noon. Live stats will be available for both games.
The Captains have won three in a row, all in conference play, while outscoring their opponents 29-6 in the streak. Last time out, CNU captured a 4-1 win over Southern Virginia with a strong pitching performance from
Adam Emerson,
Caleb Myers and
Justin Garber, along with timely hitting in the team's last at-bat. It was the fifth time this season the Captains offense has captured a win with the go-ahead run in their final at-bat, good for half of the season's victories.
Offensively, sophomore second baseman
Keith Roberts leads the team with a .390 average, while driving in a team-high 15 runs this season. Roberts has also scored 15 times, tied for the team lead, is 6-for-6 on the basepaths and leads the team in on-base percentage with a .443 mark. Junior first baseman
Connor Henderson is right behind Roberts with a .385 average, posting 15 runs and 12 RBI. The best pop in the lineup has come from rookie left fielder
Brandon Ginch, with a team-high four home runs with 12 RBI and 15 runs scored. Ginch is hitting .349 and the trio are all playing stellar defense with just three errors in 212 combined chances, for a 98.6% effort.
On the mound, Christopher Newport has started to limit opposing batters at a higher clip, led by junior
Blake Ream. The first-year starter for the Captains has a 3.54 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 20.1 innings of work, starting five of six games this season.
Cameron Parker has also picked up three starts in seven appearances, striking out a team-high 23 batters in 20 innings pitched. A pair of bullpen arms,
Caleb Myers and
Justin Garber, continue to anchor a strong contingent of relievers. Both have pitched in 11 of CNU's 17 games this season, with only two runs allowed each. Garber has three saves and 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings, while Myers has a team-best 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings of work.
CNU will be taking on a Wesley program that has won three of its last four games after starting the year 1-9. The Wolverines are led offensively by Tyler Hunter, who ranks in the league's top ten with a .400 average. He's also among the league leaders in stolen bases, with seven, and ranks second on the team in runs scored with 14. Matt Domian, at .333, and Eric Speidel, at .314, are the only other Wesley players hitting over .300 this season. Both have hit two home runs this season while Speidel leads the team in extra-base hits with six. Eric Willey has made four starts for Wesley, including one complete game. The junior right-hander has a 5.40 ERA and helps anchor a staff that has seen seven different pitchers combine to start 14 games this season.
