NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU baseball team is back in action on Wednesday, March 25 as they host Southern Virginia University in a Capital Athletic Conference mid-week tilt. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Captains Park, kicking off a pivotal week that includes five games, four in conference play.
The Captains have improved to 9-7 overall with a 3-5 mark against league foes, while Southern Virginia is 3-8 overall, going 2-4 against the conference. The Knights are coming off back-to-back league doubleheaders, sweeping St. Mary's (Md.) before suffering a pair of setbacks to York (Pa.). The Captains have won two in a row, sweeping Penn State Harrisburg in a CAC doubleheader last weekend.
The twin bill against the Lions helped get the CNU offense rolling, pushing the team batting average to over .300, led by sophomore second baseman
Keith Roberts. The first-year Captain is now hitting a team-best .382 while leading the club in RBI and runs scored with 15 in each category. He has five extra-base hits, including two home runs, and leads the team in on-base percentage by getting on nearly 44% of the time.
Rookie outfielder
Brandon Ginch leads the team in total bases and slugging percentage, smacking nine extra-base hits while scoring 14 times.
Connor Henderson, hitting .377, rounds out a trio of Captains over .350 while posting a team-high 15 runs scored with 12 RBI.
Southern Virginia has been led offensively by junior Madison Hildebrandt reaching base in half of his plate appearances this season, ranking among the league leaders in on-base percentage. He's hitting .378 with six walks so far this season. Rookie Luke Smith has provided a bulk of the run production, also hitting .378 with a team-high 12 RBI. He's also scored a team-best 10 times.
