BRIDGEWATER, Va.- The Christopher Newport softball team continued its winning ways Saturday, taking a non-conference doubleheader from Shenandoah by scores of 6-0 and 3-2. The Captains, ranked tied for 22nd in the nation, extended their winning streak to five game.
Keith Parr's squad is now 9-4 on the year while Shenandoah falls to 3-9.
Sophomore starter
Krista Lewis dominated the opening game, throwing a complete-game shutout, and allowing just one hit. Lewis gave up just a leadoff single in the fifth inning to the Hornets, and struck out four while improving her record to 5-2. Lewis faced just 22 batters, one more than the minimum, and retired the first 12 and final nine batters she faced.
The Captains gave Lewis all the run support she needed in the top of the first inning, when they scored four times. Junior
Scoop Simon and senior
Sabrina Hill posted RBI hits, followed by a
Rachael Payne double that scored two more.
CNU added two more runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a passed ball and an RBI groundout from senior
Kelsey Lewis to complete the scoring.
In the second game, the Captains plated all three of their runs in the first two innings, and all were driven in by freshmen. CNU held on to win, 3-2, as senior lefthander
Hanah Marshall threw the complete game victory.
Freshman shortstop
Brittney Walters doubled in two runs in the top of the first inning, and freshman catcher
Hannah Cook cracked her second home run of the season in the second to give CNU all the runs it would need.
Marshall upped her record to 4-2, scattering eight hits and striking out six Hornets batters. She gave up just solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings, and only one of the runs was earned.
The Saturday matinee was moved to Bridgewater due to bad weather in Winchester.
The Captains will conclude the weekend on Sunday with another doubleheader against an ODAC opponent. CNU plays at Eastern Mennonite with the first pitch set for 1:30 p.m.
