NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Now in the thick of the Capital Athletic Conference season, the Christopher Newport baseball team will host a key conference doubleheader on Saturday, welcoming in the Penn State Harrisburg Lions (4-4, 1-0) at Noon. The Captains (7-7, 1-5) have played more conference games than any other team so far, and are currently in eighth place in the league standings. The Lions, with just one league game in the books, are at the top of the standings with unbeaten Salisbury and York (Pa.).
Live stats and a live video webcast will be available of both games at CNUsports.com/live. First pitch for game one is scheduled for Noon, with a tentative start time for game two slated for 3:00 pm.
Since opening the conference regular season with a 19-13 win over Marymount, the Captains have dropped five straight league games. CNU will look to right the ship against the Lions on Saturday, leaning on juniors
Connor Henderson and
Kyle Corwin, offensively. Henderson is hitting .352 with a team-high 10 RBI, while Corwin has posted a .314 average with 8 RBI and six runs scored. Sophomore
Keith Roberts is also over .300 on the year with a .326 mark, scoring 11 times for the Captains.
On the mound, CNU has gotten great innings from three bullpen arms, led by closer
Justin Garber. The senior right-hander has 13 strikeouts in nine appearances, posting a 1.80 ERA with three saves.
Caleb Myers and
Brett Mays have combined to give up just one run this season in 16.2 innings pitched, while striking out 16.
Coming into Saturday's doubleheader, the Penn State Harrisburg Lions are used to playing on the road, with all eight games coming away from home. Most recently, the Lions captured a wild win at Marymount for their conference opener, winning 14-11 in a back-and-forth contest. Junior Bryan Balshy leads an offense that has shown the ability to score runs in bunches this season, hitting .480 in seven games. Balshy has a team-high four extra-base hits and has scored a team-high seven times. Senior outfielder Cody Henry is doing most of the damage, hitting .348 with a home run and 11 RBI.
