The late-game offense continued to impress for CNU, scoring three runs in the final inning, but the nationally-ranked conference rivals had built too big a lead to recover.
The scheduling disaster that has been the 2015 baseball season has seen teams forced to reschedule games into compact portions of the calendar, including this week for both teams. CNU played back-to-back doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday before traveling to Salisbury, and the Sea Gulls have played in four straight days, including a trip to Newport News on Tuesday to take down the Apprentice School.
Despite the innings count this week, both head coaches turned to just two pitchers on Wednesday, with Dan Fein improving to 3-0 for the Sea Gulls after a strong 7-inning performance. The Captains countered with
Adam Emerson (1-2), who tossed three innings before giving way to
Ryan Powell for the final five frames.
Salisbury jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings with a big number in the third to distance themselves from CNU. The biggest knock of the inning came from Jake Dmiterchik with a bases-clearing double. He then came around to scre on a Kyle Hayman RBI single, capping a seven-run inning.
Through the first five innings, Fein managed to face just one more batter than the minimum, allowing just one hit to lead off the game from
Keith Roberts. CNU looked ready to strike against the senior southpaw in the sixth when
Taylor Loudon reached on a base-hit bunt in the sixth, followed by a double from Roberts. On the two-base hit, though, Loudon tried to score all the way from first and was caught at the plate on the relay for the second out of the inning. Fein finished out the inning and recorded another 1-2-3 inning in the 7th to close out a fine pitching performance.
As the game reached the final inning, the Captains offense sparked to life as it has all season. In the ninth inning this season, CNU is hitting a team-high .394 with 14 runs scored. On Wednesday, Roberts kicked off the ninth with a walk and moved up to third base ono a double from
Brandon Ginch.
Connor Henderson, the team's leading hitter, delivered a two-run double to left field to get the Captains on the board. With two outs,
Tyler Wood delivered an RBI single, plating Henderson and rounding out the CNU offense.
Roberts was 2-for-3 and Wood finished the day 2-for-2 to lead the CNU offense. Five different Salisbury players had mult-hit performances, while Dmiterchik led the team with three RBI.
CNU will return to Captains Park for their next four games, facing off against Penn State Harrisburg in a conference doubleheader this Saturday, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for Noon, with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com/live.
