Captains Hit the Road Wednesday to Take On No. 4 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. -- On Wednesday, the Christopher Newport baseball team returns to conference action as they hit the road for a tough test against the fourth-ranked team in the nation, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls (7-0, 3-0). The Captains (7-6, 1-4) are coming off a doubleheader split against Stevens on Monday, while the Sea Gulls are facing their fifth game in four days.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm on Wednesday, with live stats and video links available on the baseball schedule at CNUsports.com. It will be the third straight conference opponent the Captains have faced with an unblemished record, after taking on Mary Washington and Frostburg State last week.

Salisbury is off to a 7-0 start after reaching the College World Series last season. This weekend, the Sea Gulls swept previously unbeaten Mary Washington in a CAC doubleheader, and continued its roll with an 11-5 win over RPI on Monday and a 10-1 win at Apprentice School on Tuesday.

While a strong pitching staff has been an asset for the Gulls, it's been a dominating offense that has powered the team to its hot start. As a team, Salisbury is hitting .352 and averaging just under 10 runs per game, led by three players hitting over .400. Junior Tyler Hrycak is off to a smoldering start, hitting four home runs and two doubles in the first portion of the season, while ranking second on the team with a .423 average. Jordan Gowe leads the team in hitting so far, with a .448 average in seven games.

For the Captains, junior Connor Henderson is leading the team with a .360 clip, while scoring a team-high 12 times. Junior shortstop Kyle Corwin is also off to a strong start, hitting .340, while driving in eight runs. On the hill, the back end of the bullpen has been impressive for the Captains, as Caleb Myers and Justin Garber have each pitched in nine of the Captains 13 games. Myers is holding opponents to a .111 average with a 0.82 ERA in 11.0 innings pitched, while Garber has three saves and 13 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched.

Following the matchup with 4th-ranked Salisbury, the Captains will return home for a doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, March 21.
