NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport baseball team hosts 25th-ranked Frostburg State University on Sunday, taking on the undefeated Bobcats in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at Noon. The Captains (6-3, 1-2) saw their twin bill against the Bobcats (10-0, 3-0) postponed by one day due to inclement weather and will look to get two nine-inning games in on Sunday.
Fans should be advised of the following schedule note: The Newport News One City Marathon is being held Sunday morning, with a portion of the race crossing through Christopher Newport University. CNU will look to halt one of the top starts in the nation, as the Bobcats rank second to only Birmingham-Southern's 14-0 mark this season. The Captains have been exceptional late in games this season, hitting .450 in the ninth inning, with eight RBI and 10 runs scored. In the last three innings, CNU is hitting .341 with 17 RBI, capturing four late-game victories early this season.
Frostburg State has been led by a potent offense that includes four players hitting over .400 on the season. Kam Stewart, at .474, and Nick Walker, at .457, are the leading hitters, driving in 30 runs and scoring 33 times between the two players. They both have also combined to go 10-for-10 on the basepaths with 17 extra-base hits combined. The Bobcats offense is averaging 9.3 runs per game while slugging an impressive .495 as a team.
On the hill, Bennett Schiltz and Clayton Freimuth lead the way with six starts combined. Schiltz is 3-0 with a 0.76 ERA, giving up just two runs in 23.2 innings pitched; Freimuth is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA and has a team-high 26 strikeouts in 15.1 IP.
