Saturday's meeting marks the ninth all-time battle between the Captains and Tigers. H-SC leads the series, 5-3, but Christopher Newport has won the previous three contests. Last year, CNU posted a 15-10 victory in Newport News.
This season, the Captains have been electric in their first two games. On Wednesday, CNU registered a 17-5 victory at Randolph-Macon. During the contest,
Dave Magdeburger had a sensational effort as the junior standout posted a career-high seven points, including four goals.
Joey Rolando also scored three times, while
Tony Cruz dominated on faceoffs after winning 15 of his 21 attempts.
So far this season, Magdeburger leads the squad with 10 points, while Rolando has seven.
John Thompson has also contributed six points, including five during the squad's 13-9 victory over No. 15 Washington & Lee on February 13. Incredibly, 14 Captains have already posted a point and 12 have scored a goal during the squad's first two games.
On the defensive end, CNU has forced 16 turnovers, including two apiece by
Brandon Moloney,
Randy Foster, and
Will Geise.
Matt Hayden has also been a force between the pipes as the sophomore boasts a .588 save percentage and a 7.37 goals-against-average. Just as successful on faceoffs, Cruz has won 24 of his 44 battles while collecting a team-high 15 ground balls.
Hampden-Sydney has been led by Thomas Anderson, who has scored nine of the team's 21 goals. Mike Funk and Jake Koferl have five points apiece as well. On the defensive end, Kyle Fraser has three caused turnovers, while David Noftsinger has a .517 save percentage. Dontae Buck has been the Tigers' main faceoff specialist, winning 17 of his 37 battles.
Following Saturday's game, Christopher Newport will remain on the road for a 1 p.m. clash against Methodist on March 4.
