Captains Travel for Semifinal Matchup at St. Mary's (Md.)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Post-season basketball continues Thursday night for the Christopher Newport Captains as they travel to the top seeded Seahawks of St. Mary's College (Md.) for a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) semifinal matchup. CNU, the fourth seed in the CAC tournament, defeated Wesley Tuesday night in the Freeman Center, 87-81 for the right to advance.

Thursday's game will tip at 7 p.m. in the O'Brien Athletic and Recreation and Arena and will be the third matchup of the season between the two schools with each winning on their home court.

In January, CNU earned a 66-58 win when freshman Marcus Carter and sophomore, Tim Daly combined to lead the Captains with a pair of double-doubles. Carter finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Daly registered 13 points and 11 boards. Kevin Regimbal and Aaron McFarland also added double figure performances during the CNU victory, the last of six consecutive wins following the Captains holiday break.

The Seahawks' trip to Newport News was the last time they experienced a loss. St. Mary's has won 12 consecutive games since the Captains victory and enter Thursday's game with a 20-4 record.

Senior guard, Nick LaGuerre, leads the CAC in scoring with a 21.5 point per game average and poured in 33 points last Wednesday when CNU lost in St. Mary's City, 88-78. A pair of juniors, Tanner Brooks and Troy Spurrier add an extra offensive dimension to the Seahawks as Brooks shoots 36% from beyond the arc and averages nearly 14 points per game while Spurrier adds 12 points a game.

The winner of Thursday's semifinal contest will play for the CAC championship on Saturday against the winner of the other semifinal between sixth-seeded Mary Washington and second-seeded Salisbury. The Eagles and Sea Gulls will play Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Maggs Center in Salisbury.

In only their second season in the Capital Athletic Conference, the Captains have the opportunity to play for the conference championship.

Thursday's game will have Live stats, live video and a live radio simulcast available online at CNUsports.com/LIVE.
