Men's Basketball Hosts Wesley to Open CAC Tournament Tuesday Night

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- It's tournament time for the Christopher Newport men's basketball team, as the Captains host Wesley College Tuesday night at the Freeman Center. Game time for the quarterfinal matchup in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament is set for 7:30 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at www.CNUsports.com/live and the game will be broadcast on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network, with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m.

The Captains are coming off a regular-season ending 66-56 win at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday. CNU finished the regular season with an 18-7 overall mark and a 13-5 record in the CAC, good enough for the fourth seed in the six-team field. Wesley concluded the regular season with a 12-13 overall record, a 10-8 CAC mark and the fifth seed in the tournament.

The winner of Tuesday night's battle will advance to a semi-final showdown Thursday night at top-seeded St. Mary's.

"One thing you can be sure of is there are going to be some great battles in this tournament," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "All the records and stats go out the window, and everybody faces the same challenge. You win three games in five days, and you're in the NCAA Tournament."

Krikorian's team has excelled in the friendly confines of the Freeman Center this year, having won 11 of 13 home games. Krikorian captured his 100th win at CNU in Saturday's victory at Penn State Harrisburg. He is now 100-36 leading the Captains.

CNU took both games this season over the Wolverines, winning in Dover, Delaware, on January 6th, 75-62. Christopher Newport defeated Wesley at the Freeman Center on February 7th, 69-51. The Captains now lead the overall series with the Wolverines, 11-4.

In Tuesday's other semi-final, third seeded Marymount will host sixth-seeded Mary Washington. The victor will play at second-seeded Salisbury Thursday evening. The semi-final winners will play at the higher seed Saturday afternoon in the title game.

Christopher Newport last year won on the road in both the quarter and semi-final rounds of the CAC Tournament. The Captains won at Salisbury and Wesley before losing at Mary Washington in the Championship in CNU's first season as a member of the league.
