ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - St. Mary's senior Nick LaGuerre posted 33 points Wednesday night as the Seahawks defeated Christopher Newport, 88-78. The victory wrapped up the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title for St. Mary's, and the Seahawks will be the top seed in next week's CAC Tournament.
"I give them all the credit in the world, they played a terrific game tonight," CNU Head Coach
John Krikorian said following the road defeat. "I was very happy with our effort and our intensity, but St. Mary's was just outstanding in every aspect of the game."
The Seahawks, now 19-4 overall and 15-2 in the CAC, led by two at the half, 43-41, and then out-scored the Captains in the second half, 45-37, at O'Brien Athletic Arena. CNU had beaten SMC at the Freeman Center on January 14th, 66-58.
LaGuerre, a strong contender for CAC Player of the Year, made 11 of 16 shots, including six of eight from three-point range in registering a season-high 33-point total. LaGuerre fell just three points shy of a career-high 36.
The Captains, now 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the Capital, were led by senior
Mike Cherry's 22 points. Cherry was followed in the scoring column by sophomore
Kevin Regimbal, who matched a career-high with 13 points. Freshman
Aaron McFarland (11) and sophomore
Rayshard Brown (10) were also in double digits.
CNU will now likely finish third or fourth in the conference standings, and will host a quarterfinal game Tuesday night at the Freeman Center in the CAC Tournament.
The Captains will complete the regular season on Saturday when they travel to play Penn State Harrisburg. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
