NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After a 2-1 start away from Captains Park, the Christopher Newport University baseball team will entertain Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday, February 11 at 2:00 pm for the 2015 home opener. The Royals are opening their season in Newport News, while CNU is looking to bounce back after its first loss of the season.
Head coach
John Harvell is in his 15th year in the dugout for the Captains, and turns to a young, talented roster in 2015. Senior
Austin Kilbourne and junior
Kyle Corwin are the only two upperclassmen that have returned to the starting lineup, helping lead an offense averaging over five runs per game so far this season. Kilbourne smashed the team's first home run of the season and Corwin has four hits in the first three games.
Newcomer
Brandon Ginch and junior
Connor Henderson are off to a hot start, as Ginch has five RBI, while Henderson is off to a 6-for-12 start with four runs scored.
Eastern Mennonite, like the Captains, will feature a young squad in 2015 after graduating four seniors, including three All-Conference selections. Unlike CNU, the Royals will likely boast three seniors in the starting lineup, led by third team All-Conference outfielder Kyle Armstrong. Brandon Carroll and Justin Rodriguez are expected to lock down the left side of the infield for second-year head coach Ben Spotts.
CNU owns a 7-2-2 advantage in the all-time series, including a perfect 3-0 mark at home. The Captains will return to action after Wednesday's opener on Saturday, February 14 at 11:00 am as they take on N.C. Wesleyan.
